One Vanderbilt got the green light Wednesday as the New York City Council voted unanimously to approve plans for the new skyscraper next door to Grand Central Terminal.
The 1,501-foot tall, 63-story office tower will provide easier access to the subway and MetroNorth, among other public amenities, paid for by developer SL Green.
The project was approved as part of a five-block-long Vanderbilt Avenue rezoning to allow larger new buildings. It will rise on the block bounded by Madison and Vanderbilt avenues and East 42nd and 43rd streets.
To earn the right to develop a tower twice as large as old zoning allowed, SL Green will spend $220 million on public infrastructure to relieve congestion in and around Grand Central.
The improvements, to be completed by 2021, include enhanced connections along the Lexington Avenue subway line, a new public plaza on Vanderbilt and two transit halls in the tower’s base.
Old buildings at the site will be demolished.
