The Sag Harbor compound of the legendary editor Alice Mayhew is now in contract.

It was last asking $4.19 million.

The estate features a main, Greek Revival home at 27 John Street, which was listed for $2.89 million.

That home, built in 1840, comes with four bedrooms, 2½ bathrooms — and features the original staircase, front and rear parlors with a fireplace, a formal dining room and a large country kitchen with an adjoining sunroom. The home sits on a third of an acre, with room for a pool. There’s also an adjacent cottage, at 8 W. Henry Street, asking $1.3 million.

Built in the 1960s, the 768-square-foot cottage features two bedrooms, a bathroom, a living room and a kitchen — with room to expand on an additional fifth of an acre.

Mayhew was a vice president and editorial director of Simon & Schuster, where she edited books that became part of the fabric of American life, from Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s “All the President’s Men” to Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s “My Own Words.”

Woodward’s latest book, “Rage” — in which he writes that President Trump knew that coronavirus was “deadly” and worse than the flu and intentionally misled Americans — is dedicated to Mayhew. The listing broker is Douglas Elliman’s Gioia DiPaolo.
