“Compton, Compton/Ain’t no city quite like mine,” claims Grammy Award-winning rap artist Kendrick Lamar of his Los Angeles County hometown in his aptly named track “Compton.”
But that doesn’t mean the rapper, who last night dropped a surprise new album called “untitled unmastered,” had it easy. Of course, Compton has seen its fair share of gang-, drug- and violence-related issues, and Lamar certainly had his own struggles growing up. He experienced stints of living on welfare and food stamps, and just six blocks from the West 137th Street home where he grew up, he witnessed his second murder at the age of 8.
Kendrick Lamar.APCompton has reportedly changed since Lamar’s childhood, with home prices back on the rise and the potential for an urban revival. But if die-hard fans are curious to see where the rapper came from — or really experience it for themselves — the home where he grew up is now available for rent.
Located at 1612 W. 137th St., this 1,200-square-foot spread asks $1,795 per month. There are three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a roomy kitchen with a stove, fridge and dishwasher. The kitchen leads to the dining area, whose window looks out to the property’s front yard. The backyard is fenced, and the home also has an attached garage with space for two cars.

Lamar reportedly lived a happy childhood in Compton, with days of riding bikes, doing backflips off of friends’ roofs and even sneaking into his parents’ house parties to dance when he was supposed to be sleeping.
It’s not clear where Lamar currently lives, but last year he spent about $550,000 on a modest home east of Compton for his parents.
