If it wasn’t already the case, this summer’s opening of EMM Group’s SL East — an outpost of the Meatpacking District nightclub known for its celebrity clientele — should solidify East Hampton as the place for those looking for the party.
If they can afford it, that is. This is, after all, an area where $250,000 summer house rentals aren’t uncommon.“East Hampton has the best retail and the best restaurants,” says EMM Group’s Eugene Remm, who, with partners Mark Birnbaum and Michael Hirtenstein, will open the 6,000-square-foot SL East next door to Philippe on Memorial Day weekend. “The price points are higher in East Hampton.”
Which is the exact reason they want to be there. “East Hampton is where our demo is,” Remm continues. “That’s where the crowd that goes to Abe & Arthur’s [the EMM-owned Meatpacking District restaurant above SL] live; their family homes are there. Those are the people who have been supporting us — the heads of whatever industries they’re in, from finance to fashion to real estate to art.”
This is the same clientele that lured the brothers Koch, proprietors of Day & Night, the brunch bacchanal that now takes place in the Plaza’s Oak Room during the cooler months, to East Hampton for a second summer. (It was previously held in Southampton.) “We felt more of our clientele is out east,” says Daniel Koch, half of the team that has branded itself Dual Groupe. “This brand is meant to live on the water. Southampton is more like a village; there’s no water. I could never go back to Southampton.”
In fact, Derek Koch, the other half of Dual Groupe, says the brothers are considering expanding in East Hampton by bringing their own Meatpacking District restaurant, MPD, to the area. If that happens, MPD would join such buzzy restaurants as Serafina East and chic boutiques including John Varvatos, Elie Tahari and Blue & Cream. (“East Hampton is prime retail,” Blue & Cream owner Jeff Goldstein says. “East Hampton is where everyone goes when it rains.”)
And with all the high-end stores, restaurants and nightlife popping up, it’s no surprise that more and more New Yorkers are looking for summer houses in East Hampton. While a Hamptons MPD remains TBD, on the list of immediate priorities for the Koch brothers is finding a house. Last summer, they stayed at the Estate, a Sag Harbor property owned by EMM Group (it’s a small community). But this year, they plan to find a house for just themselves.
Will they buy? “I think we’re going to be conservative and just rent,” Derek says.
