A penthouse at the historic Hotel Albert, at 23 E. 10th St., has closed for $5.5 million, down from its $5.99 million asking price last year.

The seller was financier Tommy Di Gaetano.

The hotel was known for housing many luminaries of New York’s literary and rock-star circles.

From its opening in 1887 to its closure in the late 1970s, guests ranged from writers like Robert Louis Stevenson and Mark Twain (who lectured there in 1901) to The Mamas & the Papas (who wrote “California Dreamin’ ” at the hotel).

The three-bedroom unit comes with hardwood floors, floor-to-ceiling windows and 1,800 square feet of terraces — including a 1,200-square-foot planted space with a gazebo, a speaker system and an outdoor shower.
