Turns out you can mess with Texas.

This week, New York ranked first in a list of the world’s 30 best cities for tech.

Real estate brokerage Savills conducted the assessment using criteria including the amount of venture capital money available, the size of the pool of qualified workers, property prices, wellness amenities, the cost of everyday items (like coffee) and the degree of access to public transit.

The 2015 and 2017 iterations of Savills’ study had Austin, Texas, in the top slot and San Francisco as the runner-up.

But in 2019, New York’s dominance in venture capital, as well as its more robust transportation network, outweighed its relatively high prices for apartments and offices, according to Savills.

This year, San Francisco came in second place and London is third.

It’s not just Amazon’s planned Long Island City hub that pushed the Big Apple to the top of the list.

Tech giants including Google, Apple and Facebook are also ramping up their presence with new or enlarged office spaces.
