Rochdale Village: Integration, Cooperative Housing, and 1960s New York

Rochdale Village in Queens began as a racially integrated and affordable nonprofit housing co-op, but by the late 1970s, many white residents had moved away. What does Rochdale tell us about the problems of integration in New York City in the era of suburbanization and economic decline? Peter Eisenstadt, author of the award-winning “Rochdale Village: Robert Moses, 6,000 Families, and New York City’s Great Experiment in Integrated Housing,” will discuss the history and legacy of the Rochdale experiment. 1 pm.
