Lindsay’s Forgotten Preservation Legacy: Air Rights and the Strengthening of the Landmarks Law
The Lindsay administration activated and extended the landmarks law and in the process, air rights were granted. How well have air rights held up as a preservation tool? These and other questions will be considered by former City Planning Commission Chairman Donald Elliott, Frank Sciame of F.J. Sciame Construction and former Office of Lower Manhattan Development Director Richard Weinstein. The NEW New York GreenHomeNYC’s DIY Green Street Festival
We aren’t crazy about this block fest’s mouthful of a name, but we do support its cause of teaching New Yorkers how to be environmentally conscious. Attendees will learn all sorts of eco-friendly ways to maintain your home, from installing and planting a green roof to composting to how to do an energy audit to capturing and reusing rain water for plants. Exhibitors will also be on hand demonstrating the latest in green technology. Kid-friendly activities include solar car building and jewelry making. American Craft at Thos. Moser
This weekend-long event includes several demonstrations, including “The Making of a Thos. Moser Continuous Arm Chair,” a live demonstration by a craftsman from Moser’s Maine workshop, on Sat. from 11 am-noon and on Sun. from 1-2 pm. There will also be a demonstration by New York metalsmith Biba Schutz and an afternoon presentation, Joinery 101 — The Art of Wood Joinery.
