If you’re a cat owner, you know keeping your space organized is next to impossible. From the litter of cat toys to the actual litter, the feline lineup of items can be quite massive.

Post Wanted recommends investing in an automatic litter box if your space warrants it. While typically a financial investment, even a small corner of an apartment-style room can be devoted to keeping your kitty’s litter virtually odor-free and under control.

“Automatic litter boxes are a variation of the traditional litter box with the addition of tech enhancements and a self-cleaning feature to remove litter waste,” Teresa Manucy, MD, a veterinarian at Chewy, told the New York Post. “Automatic litter boxes work by detecting when your cat has gone to the bathroom and then raking and depositing the waste into a separate waste receptacle, which means you don’t have to scoop the poop yourself.”

Automatic litter boxes typically cost much more than traditional litter boxes, but to many pet parents, they are a game changer and worth the investment.

Ahead, Post Wanted gathered all of our cat-owning BFFs and put 3 top automatic litter boxes to the test. Read on for our full review, and our in-depth FAQ section highlights the benefits of these models, how to use them and more.

Burke told us that the smooth surfaces and removable components simplify maintenance tasks, allowing for quick and efficient cleaning. “The odor control features are highly effective, keeping my home smelling fresh and eliminating the need for constant air fresheners,” Burke added. “The standout feature of Leo Loo Too is its integrated motion sensor technology; the box detects when a cat enters and exits, triggering a self-cleaning cycle after each use.”He told Post Wanted that the automated process not only reduces the daily maintenance workload but also ensures a consistently clean environment for his cat. “It’s a game-changer for busy pet owners,” he highlighted.Leo Loo Too’s quiet operation during the cleaning cycle is noteworthy, too. “My cats are not startled by loud noises, contributing to a stress-free bathroom experience,” he shared. “Additionally, the litter tracking is minimal, thanks to the thoughtful design that keeps messes contained within the box.”One con Burke noticed is that the waste bin is a bit smaller and when you have multiple cats, it tends to fill a lot faster than other models, like the Litter-Robot 4 below. However, all three of Burke’s cats use this model daily and *love* it.CHEWY $699.99

Its sleek and modern appearance seamlessly blends into any living space. “The construction is sturdy and the materials used are of high quality, ensuring durability over time,” Burke added. “The thoughtful engineering of this litter box is evident, making it a reliable and long-lasting addition to any cat lover’s home.”The automatic feature of the Litter-Robot 4 “is a godsend,” Burke said. “No more scooping and dealing with unpleasant odors. The unit efficiently sifts through the litter after each use, depositing clumps into a convenient waste drawer. This not only saves time but also minimizes the amount of litter wasted, so I’m no longer buying loads of litter as frequently.”One of the standout features of this model is its large litter chamber, suitable for multiple cats. The spacious interior ensures that even households with multiple cats can benefit from the Litter-Robot 4 without compromising on cleanliness.“The unit is also compatible with various types of clumping litter, providing flexibility for pet owners to choose their preferred brand,” Burke said. “The waste drawer is easy to access and clean, and the unit notifies you when it’s time to empty it, ensuring that you never forget.”The app allows for remote monitoring and control, too, which adds an extra layer of convenience to the overall user experience. “I will say, the only annoyance I have come across is the constant updating if the cleaning cycle is interrupted by my cats,” Burke shared. “Also, my cats do tend to track a decent amount of litter out of the bin. The cats tend to take an interest in all of the noise, though not loud, and this keeps them captivated.” Or, should we say, cat-activated.As a result, all three of Burke’s cats have easily acclimated to the Litter-Robot 4 and, therefore, have no longer used their traditional litter boxes.CHEWY $799.00LITTER-ROBOT $699.00
  • Best Budget Automatic Litter Box: INSTACHEW PURRCLEAN Automatic Cat Litter BoxChewyPros:Futuristic, modern design that’s fairly priced, compared to other models testedThe flat top doubles as a lounging surface for your cat to chill onEffective safety sensors that are app-compatibleCons:May not be best for larger catsDimensions: 27 x 21 x 20 in | Weight: 4.6 pounds | Material: PlasticHolly Coley, commerce updates editor, was very excited to try the INSTACHEW Purrclean because who likes cleaning a litter box? No one!“The machine is easy to set up, even if you’re not a directions whiz — and believe me, I’m not!” she shared after testing the model at home. “The book comes with clear steps, plus pictures, and there’s also a helpful video tutorial you can watch online. It took awhile for my cat to get used to having it around but it’s perfectly (or should I say purr-fectly) quiet and remained completely still when she was in its vicinity.”Litter bags, plus a deodorizer are included, and easy to place in the lower tray, which slides out the bottom. And, once you connect the machine to the app, you can schedule cleanings or have it run automatically! “Looks-wise, I love it,” she noted. “It’s very futuristic and modern, and the flat top doubles as a lounging surface for your cat to chill on!”Coley would recommend keeping your kitty out of the room while the box calibrates. “Mine wasn’t a fan of the barrel turning,” she said. “However, I think both of us appreciate the INSTACHEW’s safety sensors, which keep it from activating while she’s inside. Also, again, you can control cleanings with the app, so you can have yours go off once your kitty is in another area.”Coley’s cat is pushing 3-years-old, so it’s an adjustment for her to get used to something new. “She’s also long, so there wasn’t a lot of room for her to circle, and then do her business,” Coley added. “However, for smaller cats or kittens, this should make a nice addition to the home.”CHEWY $499.00 $434.26WALMART $499.99 $434.26More Automatic Litter Boxes We Recommend

It has plenty of room for big, as well as smaller cats, and can be ordered with or without a cover. Instead of clumping clay litter, the box comes with low-tracking crystals. The fast-absorbing material traps the scent of urine before it hits your nostrils, leaving your home smelling fresher. Although some users found setup difficult, it’s a bit easier (in our opinion) than other automatic models. Simply place the tray with the crystals below the box and wait for your cat to enter. It can also be ordered with accessories, including a front step, which is ideal for older cats that may struggle with mobility. The waste draw is enclosed and features a carbon filter to absorb odor. Before you present to your cat(s), it’s suggested to add a bit of used cat litter to the new. This will make the new box smell more familiar, creating less of an adjustment for the kitty. • Best for Large Cats: Neakasa M1 Open-Top Self Cleaning Cat Litter BoxAmazonPros:Supports cats up to 33 poundsCan go 2 weeks without scooping11.23 lb capacityCons:The machine closes when the tray is full, so cats can’t use itDimensions: 23.2 x 20.2 x 20.6 | Weight: 22 pounds | Material: PlasticNo one likes using a bathroom that’s too small, even cats, so we suggest this number if your kitty needs extra room. It doesn’t have a lid, providing extra breathing space, it’s easier for them to see what’s happening outside the bathroom door. The sturdy box can accommodate a cat of 33 pounds, so even if your fur baby is on the fluffier side, it should be comfortable. The litter tray fits beneath the machine and holds more than 10 pounds of waste. However, don’t let the 14 days of scoop-free living allow you to completely shirk your doodie duties. The machine will close on you (or should we say kitty?) when it’s too full, so unless you want them to be locked out of the toilet, we suggest monitoring waste levels with the Neakasa app. Capable of working for a multiple feline household and featuring an easy setup, you’ll wonder how you lived without this machine.AMAZON $599.00NEAKASA $499.99

An FAQ on Automatic Litter Boxes

Ahead, veterinarian Teresa Manucy, MD answers some to-know questions on automatic litter boxes before investing in one for your cat — or cats.

What are the benefits of automatic litter boxes?

“The biggest benefits are that automatic litter boxes allow for more effective odor control and make litter box maintenance easy,” Dr. Manucy told The Post. “Busy pet parents find this helpful and convenient so they can spend less time scooping and refilling the litter box.”

How do automatic litter boxes work and self-clean?

“Automatic litter boxes typically rake, sift or flush solid waste into a waste trap and all you have to do is swap the tray as often as the instructions recommend, typically every few weeks or once a month,” Manucy shared.

The compartment provided will collect cat waste by sifting or raking, too. “This will reduce the daily need for scooping,” she added. “The intermittent emptying of the container allows minimal contact with the urine and feces.”

Additionally, the litter box compartment that collects the waste will need to be emptied regularly and the sifted litter will need to be replenished on occasion to maintain freshness and full function.

“There are some styles that offer pre-filled disposable trays of premium crystal litter with exceptional odor control,” Manucy added. “The covered waste receptacle will trap solid waste to help contain the accompanying odor.”

What smart features do some automatic litter boxes have?

“The main smart feature that litter boxes have is a sensor to detect your cat’s presence when your cat has gone to the bathroom before it begins the cleaning cycle, which typically occurs three to 20 minutes after, depending on the model,” Manucy explained.

Some models even let you monitor your cat’s health and track their weight through apps designed with the Litter-Robot 4 ($699), and the PetSafe ScoopFree ($300 $250) litter boxes.

How do automatic litter boxes help eliminate odors?

By storing waste in an enclosed drawer, the auto litter boxes help reduce odors and many also have a charcoal or carbon filter to eliminate bacteria and neutralize odors.

“The Casa Leo litter box has a fully enclosed waste drawer with an EPA-certified UV light treatment system, thick sealing strips and dense carbon filters to help eliminate bacteria and reduce unpleasant odors,” Manucy highlighted.

What’s more, the INSTACHEW PURRCLEAN features a built-in odor eliminator and an advanced air purification system. “Equipped with a high-pressure ozone chamber that releases ozone in safe doses, it breaks down odor-producing molecules for fresher, cleaner air,” she said. “No refills are required and the odor eliminator just keeps working on its own.”

What type of litter is best for automatic litter boxes?

Clumping, scoopable clay litter is primarily used since it must hold up under mechanical sifting. “An alternative option is a crystal type of litter, which is said to reduce odors faster than clumping litter,” Manucy said, providing an alternative. “Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for optimal function in case a specific type of litter is required.”

For example, the INSTACHEW PURRCLEAN litter box can accommodate any clumping litter, so you won’t have to switch to a different kind if you’re already using clumping litter.

Additional top-rated clumping clay litter options:

Is there anything I need to buy in addition to my automatic litter box?

You will need to get litter, though you may end up using less litter with an automatic litter box. As always, follow the instructions for the product you are using.

“If you’d like, you can also get a litter mat to catch any particles your cat may track out,” Manucy recommended. “However, you’ll want to make sure the litter mat doesn’t interfere with the operations of the auto litter box, so make sure to consider a mat’s size and positioning.”

Litter liner bags for drawers can also help simplify the cleaning process as you can easily dispose of it like a trash bag. “Many litter box brands make their own liners such as Litter-Robot 4 and Casa Leo, so just ensure the size of the liner is compatible with the model of automatic litter box you have,” Manucy said.

If your model has a carbon or charcoal filter, you will need to replace those as well and they typically need to be replaced monthly.

How we tested

Ahead, Post Wanted followed the following criteria after testing each model for approximately one month on four different cats. We also consulted a veterinarian to learn more about automatic cat litter boxes and what to look for ahead of testing. See below for our expert-approved testing criteria:

  • Noise: The sound made when an automatic litter box operates may influence the usage of the box. Look for one that is extra quiet and has a delay in raking or sifting until the cat is no longer in close proximity to avoid startling them.
  • Space: Ideally, choose a box that provides ample room for the cat to stand and turn around comfortably inside the box. A larger cat may require more space than a standard-sized box will allow, so selecting a roomier version is best.
  • Safety: Some litter boxes have an additional feature that senses the cat’s presence to prevent automatic cleaning. This will avoid any accidental triggering of the mechanism which could cause avoidance behavior.
  • Exit surface: An additional tray or mat that is included with some litter boxes may help reduce the amount of tracked litter on the ground as the cat exits the box. This is another time saver when keeping the immediate environment clean.
  • Collection container size: Increased use of the litter box will result in more frequent cleaning to keep litter clear. A larger tray allows for more waste to be stored after multiple cats’ use.
  • Health data tracker: With an additional digital device connected wirelessly, the tracking of typical litter box usage will indicate early changes in the frequency of use. For some models, the cat’s weight may also be measured to note any variations between health checks.
