FAQs
Why should I trust a private chef’s recommendations for kitchen tools?
I’ve spent hundreds of hours in various kitchens throughout my career and training, testing and refining my techniques and practicing on countless tools. I’ve learned what works best through experience and experimentation. My recommendations are based on practical use and the need for efficiency and quality in my cooking.
What is the number one kitchen tool I should invest in?
If I had to choose just one, it would be a high-quality chef’s knife. A sharp, well-balanced knife can make all the difference in food preparation, from chopping vegetables to slicing meat. It’s a versatile tool that I use every day. Just be sure to take great care of it, cleaning it properly and sharpening often.
Are there any kitchen gadgets that are overrated?
Frankly, in my opinion, single-use gadgets like avocado slicers or egg separators can clutter up your kitchen without adding much value. I prefer tools that can perform multiple functions and are durable enough to withstand daily use. That said, if you’re someone who cuts more avocados and separates more eggs than other activities in the kitchen, these can be some of the most valuable.
What’s a kitchen tool you can’t live without?
I can’t live without my cast iron skillet. It’s incredibly versatile — perfect for searing, baking, and even roasting. It retains heat well and adds a wonderful flavor to dishes. With proper care, it lasts a lifetime. And, I’m a sucker for how it looks — I (after warning my clients about the heat) love serving dishes in it on a hot plate.
How do I choose the right cutting board?
I recommend investing in a good-quality wooden cutting board. It’s gentle on your knives and provides a stable surface for chopping, two extremely important things when you’re working quickly and often. Look for one that’s large enough to handle big tasks but easy to clean and maintain.
What’s a lesser-known kitchen tool that you find indispensable?
A microplane grater is one of my secret weapons. It’s perfect for zesting citrus, grating cheese, or even mincing garlic. Its fine blades make quick work of these tasks, adding fresh flavor to your dishes effortlessly.
Do I need an expensive blender for cooking?
Not necessarily. While high-end blenders can be powerful and versatile, a mid-range blender can also do a great job for most home cooking needs. It’s all about finding one that fits your budget and handles the types of tasks you plan to use it for.
