Cashmere is a high-end type of wool that derives from the soft undercoat of cashmere goats. These goats, primarily found in Mongolia and northern China, produce this fine wool as a natural insulation layer to keep them warm in cold climates.

Cashmere is beloved largely in part for its softness, warmth and lightweight feel. Its fibers are finer and softer than regular wool which aids in it feeling smooth and luxurious against the skin.

The process of collecting cashmere is labor-intensive. Each spring, goats naturally shed their undercoat. To collect the cashmere, goats are combed rather than sheared. This process is done by hand and laborers will gently pull out the soft, fine undercoat fibers while leaving the coarser outer hair behind.

Then, the collected fibers are sorted. This involves separating the fine cashmere fibers from the coarser outer hairs. The finest fibers are softer and more valuable and make their way into quality sweaters.

Once cashmere fibers are sorted, the rest of the process consists of cleaning, carding, spinning, dyeing, knitting or weaving, and finishing. All components allow for each clothing piece to feel incredibly smooth to the touch.

First and foremost, cashmere sweaters are derived from an incredibly time-consuming harvesting process. Each goat produces only a small amount of cashmere — typically around 4 to 6 ounces (100 to 150 grams) per year — and each amount is hand-collecting and hand-combed.

Other factors like scarcity, the quality of fibers and craftsmanship lend themselves to a higher price tag.
