Finding the perfect work dress for women has become a bit of a moving target, especially in the era of B.C. (Before COVID) and A.C. (After COVID). It’s like something shifted for all women, and we collectively realized that comfort, style, and fit are no longer optional — they’re a must.

Before, we might have worn clothes that didn’t quite lay right just because they were on sale or chose a cute style that ended up being uncomfortable. Now, women are prioritizing pieces that not only fit well but also feel as comfortable as athleisure and show off their figure. We’re embracing this new standard, but where do we begin for stylish work dresses?

Thankfully, we’re leaving long-sleeve work dresses behind for winter and looking ahead to maxi work dresses and more for the warm season ahead. Although nothing can replace the classic Diane Von Furstenberg wrap work dresses, we’ve found things that are in a more respectable price range.

We’ve tested everything from classic little black dresses to styles perfect for those summer Fridays when you can go straight from desk to beach, just in case.

While work pants and totes are also essential, there’s nothing like putting on a flowy midi dress to start the day, especially if it’s versatile. But just in case, we curated a list of the best work clothes that go beyond dresses. If you dislike the hefty price tag and enjoy a rotating closet, we suggest checking out the rental subscriptions we tested.

Let’s shop for work-appropriate clothing that elevates your style without compromising comfort. After all, you’ve heard it before: dress for success.

Best for Work Travel Abercrombie & Fitch The A&F Ava Knit Midi Dress

Abercrombie & Fitch Abercrombie & Fitch

The cotton-blend fabric feels incredibly soft against my skin, which makes it comfortable to wear throughout the day. Sometimes, I’m assembling an e-bike at the office, and other times, I’m sitting pretty in a boardroom, so I need my outfits to have some give and versatility throughout the day.

Thanks to the elastane, the fabric’s slight stretch allows for a nice fit that moves with you, making it perfect for work and beyond. Because of the stretchy material, it’s not a dress you’re dying to take off as soon as you get home.

The ruching along the bodice is flattering, helping to accentuate my waist without being too tight. I especially liked the portrait neckline, while the flirty slit on the skirt gives it a playful vibe without being too revealing. Not that I have any issues with long slits, but I also want to be work appropriate and fit into the unofficial dress code.

Best Long Sleeve: Quince 100% Organic Cotton Poplin Midi Tunic Dress

QuinceQuince

New York Post Review: “This mid-length tunic dress is perfect for casual days at the office but also works for running errands on weekends. It has pockets, which is always a plus, and even though it’s made with lightweight cotton poplin, it has a durable feel. I absolutely love the puffed sleeves and ruffle detail of the skirt.” – Holly J Coley, commerce updates editor

Best Business Casual: Reformation Sai Dress

The design is flattering, with a fitted bodice that hugs in all the right places and a full skirt that adds a fun, feminine touch. My favorite aspect of this dress is the hidden pockets in the fold of the material. It makes it easy to hold my work badge for swiping in and out of the office, and it can hold a tampon or two, so your co-workers don’t need to know your monthly business.

I found the sizing to be accurate and the shape forgiving of my fluctuating waistband. For care, it’s not as easy as tossing it into a washing machine, so for this, I’d say it’s a little finicky, but you can wash it at home in cold water and dry it flat, which keeps the fabric looking fresh.

Best Shirt Dress: Pomander Place Green Stripe Reina Dress

Tuckernuck Tuckernuck

On a hot summer’s day, this dress is what you want hanging on your frame because it’s loose and airy and made from 100% cotton. It’s my new favorite dress to wear on Fridays, so I can go from work to the beach without changing. It also makes a lovely swimsuit cover-up, so overall, I find this dress to be multipurpose.

The side slits provided just the right amount of flexibility, so I didn’t feel stiff or constrained when walking. I walk to the bathroom down a long hallway every day, passing a row of coworkers who can’t help but hear the swoosh of my dress fabric as I walk by. With this dress, though, it didn’t make as much noise. It’s a small thing, but those little details can be bothersome, and I’m pleased to say this wasn’t an issue with this dress.

Best Midi: Anthropologie The Peregrine Midi Dress

AnthropologieAnthropologie

This dress looks really cute on the model, but I felt it was a bit less flattering on me, though it’s not typically my go-to style. That said, I did like the flutter sleeves; they made the dress feel more professional than a sleeveless sundress.

The midi length hit the right spot, giving it a polished feel without being too formal. The soft A-line silhouette kept me comfortable throughout the day, and the side pockets were a nice touch.

I love Anthropologie because of its of-the-moment whimsical styles and inclusive sizing. If you’re petite or plus size, this brand has lots of options to choose from.

Best Petite Aritzia: Babton Bond Dress

Aritzia has some great options for fresh-out-of-college corporate work dresses because when you’re this young and cute, no one has time to look stuffy and tired. Aritizia provides trendy styles while still. looking professional.

New York Post Review: “Curating an outfit before work can feel like a nightmare — not to mention, leaving your closet looking like a bomb exploded. A simple, comfortable dress is the way to go, and The Bond from Aritzia is just that. A high boat neckline adds some class, and when paired with boots and a cardigan, you can dress it appropriately for the weather. Take off said accessories, add some heels and jewelry, and you have the ideal mini dress for post-work drinks. The fit-and-flare design lightly drapes around your body without hugging it. Soft structured stretch fabric moves and bends easily, so you can sit without adjusting and catch the subway without feeling like you’ll topple over. I sized up for a looser fit and love how it fits. The best part? It’s got pockets, too. As far as women’s work clothing goes, I give The Bond five stars.”- Miska Salemann, commerce reporter

New York Post Review: “Finding a work dress when you’re plus size can feel like a full-time job in itself, which is why I’m so glad I found this midi dress from Universal Standard’s Anthropologie-exclusive plus line — it’s become one of my favorite things in my closet. The navy, blue, and white floral print is perfect for spring and the fit, with ruching on one side, is so flattering. It’s the perfect length (even on my 5’1” frame) and looks great with sandals, flats, and white sneakers.” – Angela Tricarico, commerce reporter for New York Post and Decider

How We Tested

To find the best work dresses, we evaluated a range based on key factors such as fabric quality, fit, and comfort level. Each dress was worn in various work environments, including office settings, meetings, and more casual workplaces, to ensure it met the demands of a typical workday. We also tested for ease of movement, breathability, and how well the dress maintained its appearance after multiple wears and washes. Feedback was gathered from individuals with different body types and style preferences to assess the overall appeal and functionality of each dress.

Additionally, we considered style options suitable for different seasons and climates, ensuring the dresses were adaptable throughout the year.
