The makeup secret on everyone’s lips this year? Wouldn’t you like to know.

Well okay, we actually can’t stop talking about it, since the viral product is all over social media, from TikTok to Instagram. We’re alluding to the Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil, which at first we assumed was a humble lip gloss by the designer makeup brand, but indeed is so much more.

We first spotted the lip oil back at the end of 2022, during the “Clean Girl” aesthetic era of TikTok. Read all about it here, as frankly the trend is still holding on through 2023 for a simple, streamlined look you can wear year round.

Back to the product at hand, however, the Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil is so much more than a trend. Stars like the iconic Bella Hadid and TikTok legend Alix Earle use the product, making it not only viral but celeb-approved.

While we aren’t celebrities, we did want to try it on our own lips, before speaking about it again. After testing the formula, we have a verdict and some other news to share — we found dupes, too! If you can’t get ahold of the actual designer brand, or want to try something more affordable first, read on for drugstore dupes that reviews say mimic the Dior formula pretty well.

Besides being the hot product of 2023, the Dior lip oil is really a Jack (or Jane) of all trades. Not only can you use the oil on it’s own for a glossy moisturizer, but you can also use it as a base under lipstick or over top of it for a glossy shine to finish the look.

“This lip oil teams an intense lip care formula with a natural, flattering color finish for an ultra-luminous result,” reads the product description. “Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil adapts to all lip colors to bring out their rosy glow. Its non-greasy, non-sticky oil texture pushes the boundaries of shine and creates a smoothing film that shapes the lips with an almost magnifying, mirror-shine effect.”

Other ingredients include cherry oil, which is a natural moisturizer that works to prevent dry and cracked lips, which is why many rave reviews say that they use it as an everyday gloss in addition to special makeup moments.

Pick a shade, any shade and you really can’t go wrong. We do know that the first shade, 001 Pink is indeed the most popular, as it provides just a touch more color than the clear formula, while remaining subdued on most ever skin tone. Read on for the color breakdown for the remaining shades, but keep in mind that makeup does look different on everyone due to your unique complexion.

000 Universal Clear: Exactly what you would think, this shade is totally transparent and just provides a sheer gloss

001 Pink: This is a very light, baby pink with a shine to it.

004 Coral: This more orange hue is a limited-edition color, that is a pinkish orange with shine.

006 Berry: A darker purple color, called “Blackcurrant” on the Dior site, with shine.

007 Raspberry: A brighter pink than 001, this shade has more pigment as well as shine.

012 Rosewood: Venturing into more of a red, this color is a rust shade with shine.

015 Cherry: A classic color for those that like a brighter pink than 001 and 007, with shine.

020 Mahogany: This is the only non-shiny shade of the collection, with a natural brown finish that is still glossy, but less shimmery than the others.

I don’t think I have been this excited to open a package in a while.

For this review, I was sent the Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil in 000 Universal Clear, 001 Pink and 015 Cherry, as those are the most popular shades that Dior sells. Frankly, as someone who used to wear cherry-red and bright orange lips in middle and high school, I tend to go for big and bright, but was very excited to see how a more subtle gloss would look on my lips.

To begin, I prepped my lips with a lip scrub, to make sure they were free of dry skin. Then, I tested the lightest shade — the no shade at all 000 Universal Clear. It is supposed to just enhance your natural lip color by adding some shine and smoothing over lines. This was the first time I was also able to smell and feel the product, and both tests passed with flying colors. The formula smells fresh and not like chemicals, with a hint of mint somewhere in the mix. The texture was very soft and smooth, which initially I assumed to mean sticky. That was not the case, as it more so coated your lips in a soft gloss rather than a sticky one. However, if you have long hair and the wind blows… yes, it will still stick! Oh and the color? Despite the pink applicator tip, the gloss was indeed clear.

Next up on the color intensity scale is the most popular shade, the 001 Pink. In the same fashion, I only applied one coat to clean, dry lips and at first I didn’t see a huge difference between the clear and this color. I then looked in different lighting and sure enough it was a very pale pink color. This shade may be too sheer for someone who already has naturally pink lips, but just like the clear, it can still be a great everyday gloss.

Lastly, the cherry-chapstick of your rich aunt — 015 Cherry. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is where I fell in love. I think this is the more subtle version of a cherry red lipstick, as while that tends to pop, this is a seductive whisper, that still gives off “kiss me” energy.

This time I also applied just one coat, but left it on for the ultimate test. After applying I then went about my day, making breakfast to see how the lip oil reacted when eating and drinking. We all know this isn’t a lip stain, so I expected transfer, but I do like a gloss to attempt to stay put at least a bit during the day, or at the very least not dry up or go gummy.

After a few hours of wear and some eating and drinking, I did indeed need to reapply, but not as much as I thought, as the color did stick around a bit. And, for a gloss, not having to reapply every 30 seconds is a great thing. I also noticed that when I did need a touch up, I felt my lips beforehand and they were noticeably softer than before, so whatever is in this cherry oil formula, it works to moisturize lips.

This dupe is so phat. Okay, we know it’s a dated phrase, but the NYX Fat Oil has been said to be an exact dupe for the Dior Lip Oil at a fraction of the price. The packaging is nothing special, but the formula is smooth and the color range includes similar shades of pinks and neutrals.

Our review: I got the NYX Fat Oil in the clear shade, called “My Main.” This one mimics the clear Dior shade, with the same plush brush and glossy but not sticky consistency. This formula does have a slight tingly, plumping effect that Dior does not, and it also has a sweeter scent.

Did Ariana Grande dupe Dior? Some say yes, as countless reviews deem her Essential Drip Lip Oil to be a dead ringer for the designer one. The applicator is unique, with a metal ball inside to load the product onto the lips and then the brush edge to apply evenly.

Our review: I was very excited to try an R.E.M beauty item from icon Ariana Grande. The formula is a bit thinner than the Dior oil, so it did take a moment to get used to the application. Speaking of application, I was a bit lost as to how the ball and brush applicator worked, but I did like the cooling metal on my lips.

Another fruity gloss, the Sephora version uses watermelon seed extract instead of the Dior’s cherry. The Clean Glossy Lip Oil comes in one pink shade as of now, with a vegan formula and a non-sticky finish.

We got the juice. The Ulta Beauty answer to the Dior oil is their Juice Infused Lip Oil. This formula is made with natural ingredients and fruit juices to create a plump looking set of lips for a fraction of the cost.

Our review: Ulta Beauty has been a mainstay in my makeup drawer, so I was optimistic about this lip oil. I first noticed the smell, which was a delightful fruity one that was sweeter than Dior but not overpowering. The formula is a bit on the thin side, but remains not sticky and leaves a subtle shine.

For gloss and plumping power, Kosas is a bestseller for a reason. The brand is sold at most makeup stores and comes in a very generous shade range. Not only does it mimic the shine of Dior, but this version also subtly plums the lips using peptides and hyaluronic acid.

It would make sense that a brand called Glossier would have a great lip gloss. The classic gloss comes in three colors, a clear, a red and then a holographic shade that combines gloss and sparkles for a galactic effect.

Our review: For a clean gloss you can put on and forget about, this is perfection. I loved how it was pretty much unscented, and the formula itself was thick but not gummy or sticky, very much mimicking the Dior consistency.
