A bright, white smile can boost confidence and leave a lasting impression, which is why teeth whitening kits have become a go-to solution for many people looking to enhance their appearance at home. With so many options on the market, from LED-powered systems to whitening strips and peroxide-free formulas, choosing the best teeth whitening kit can feel overwhelming.

Whether you’re prepping for a big event or just want to refresh your smile, finding a kit that balances effectiveness, sensitivity, and ease of use is key.

In this guide, we’ve rounded up the best teeth whitening kits available in 2025, based on expert recommendations, user reviews and real-world results. We’ll break down how each kit works, what kind of results you can expect and which ones are ideal for sensitive teeth.

“Through the use of different oxygen molecule peroxides such as hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide, you can remove stubborn stains from the teeth,” Kevin Sands, DDS shared with Post Wanted, explaining the 411 on teeth whitening. “When the oxygen molecules interact with surface stains they react by breaking apart the chemical bonds that hold the stain to your enamel.”

Dr. Sands is a dentist to the stars, so to speak, with celebrity clients such as Kim Kardashian, Lana Del Rey, Jojo Siwa, Anastasia Karanikolaou, Tyga and more. If you can’t make it out to his Beverly Hills practice however, he did let us in on some favorite products and other helpful tips.

“For those that wish to whiten their teeth at home, I would recommend you brush your teeth before applying any whiteners to ensure that you are removing any plague from your day and prepping the area properly,” advised Sands.

Lauren Becker, DDS, also weighed in, via email from her practice in Manhattan. Obviously the best results will come from a professional treatment, but there are some tips for getting your pearly whites to stay, well, white.

“I suggest drinking light or clear liquids so that the stains on the teeth loosen easier. Also avoid acidic beverages like juices, sodas or dark sauces like soy sauce and ketchup,” said Becker. “Instead of whiskey or red wine for alcohol, I recommend that my patients enjoy white wine, vodka or tequila as alternatives. Since I’m a cool dentist and know how to have a good time, instead of cutting out alcohol all together, I suggest options that are lighter in color.”

AmazonAmazon

“One product I recommend for an at-home whitening kit is Crest 3D Whitening Strips. These strips are safe to use and will effectively remove 10+ years of stains,” said Sands.

These are also easy to shop, as they are sold on Amazon and frequently go on sale, saving you a few bucks and taking off years of stains.

Crest 3D White Brilliance 2 Step Kit

AmazonAmazon

Another win for Crest, here. Dr. Becker recommends this Amazon find for at-home whitening, making it easy to maintain your smile from home.

“White strips can be bulky, annoying and require consistency and time while all this requires is the two minutes that you should already be brushing your teeth,” said Becker. “The Step 1 cleanser helps remove plaque while helping prevent sensitivity. Step 2 contains peroxide — the active bleaching agent in any whitening product — and helps whiten and brighten.”

Crest Pro-Health Advanced Antibacterial Protection Toothpaste (4-Pack)

AmazonAmazon

Dr. Becker also recommends this toothpaste as a great one if a whiter smile is what you are after. This one is sold in a pack of four so you won’t run out too quickly, although you should be brushing twice a day — doctor’s orders if you want to maintain that healthy white glow.

“Teeth whitening varies depending on the patient and how well they maintain their teeth. A fair amount of my patients like to professionally whiten their teeth when they have their cleanings, every six months,” explained Becker.

An FAQ on Teeth Whitening

What is teeth whitening, and how does it work for at-home kits?

Teeth whitening or tooth bleaching is a cosmetic treatment that lightens the color of patient’s teeth and helps remove stains and discoloration.

“Most at-home kits use peroxide-based ingredients (like carbamide or hydrogen peroxide) to break down stains on the enamel — the outer layer of your teeth,” Mary Anne Melo, MD, dentist and clinical professor at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, told The Post. “These kits often come as gels, strips, or trays that you apply daily over a set period.”

Is teeth whitening safe for everyone?

If used as directed, yes, teeth whitening is safe, but it’s not for everyone.

“Kids under 13 and pregnant or breastfeeding women are usually advised to avoid whitening treatments,” Dr, Melo shared. “People with sensitive teeth, gum disease, cavities or exposed roots should speak with a dentist first. Whitening products can sometimes cause temporary sensitivity or gum irritation, especially if overused or misapplied.”

What types of teeth whitening exist on the market?

There’s a wide range of options in the market available to different needs of patients.

  • In-office whitening: Done by a dentist using stronger peroxide solutions, often 5-6x the concentration of at-home kits. Offers fast results in just one visit.
  • At-home kits from the dentist: Custom trays with professional-grade gel, used over several weeks.
  • Over-the-counter kits: Strips, LED trays, or gels with lower peroxide concentrations.
  • Whitening toothpaste: Doesn’t change tooth color but helps remove surface stains with gentle abrasives.
  • Whitening pens or mouth rinses: Mild and convenient, but effects are usually minimal.

When will I see results from teeth whitening?

Results vary by method and patients’ habits. “In-office treatments can show results after first or second sessions,” Dr. Melo shared. “At-home kits usually take 2-3 weeks of consistent use.”

Whitening toothpaste and strips may take longer and provide more subtle changes. “But remember — results aren’t permanent,” she added. “If you drink coffee, tea, red wine or smoke, your teeth can stain again over time.”
