Step 2 contains peroxide — the active bleaching agent in any whitening product — and helps whiten and brighten.”

“Kids under 13 and pregnant or breastfeeding women are usually advised to avoid whitening treatments,” Dr, Melo shared. “People with sensitive teeth, gum disease, cavities or exposed roots should speak with a dentist first. Whitening products can sometimes cause temporary sensitivity or gum irritation, especially if overused or misapplied.”

Results vary by method and patients’ habits. “In-office treatments can show results after first or second sessions,” Dr. Melo shared. “At-home kits usually take 2-3 weeks of consistent use.”

Whitening toothpaste and strips may take longer and provide more subtle changes. “But remember — results aren’t permanent,” she added. “If you drink coffee, tea, red wine or smoke, your teeth can stain again over time.”
