This is the night Caitlin Clark goes from an unprecedented college basketball sensation to the most-hyped rookie in WNBA history.

Clark’s move to the professional ranks becomes official Monday night in the 2024 WNBA draft. She is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick by the Indiana Fever.

It is the tipoff moment for a landmark season for the WNBA, riding a remarkable wave of interest in the women’s game.

The buzz for the draft extends to the star-studded class of players who will join Clark at the Brooklyn Academy Music: Where will LSU phenom Angel Reese land? Who will be the No. 2 pick? Who will the New York Liberty add in their quest for a title?

What you need to know

The Liberty's draft class

By Jonathan Lehman

The Liberty would up with four players in their 2024 WNBA draft class: guard Marquesha Davis (No. 11) and forwards Esmery Martinez (No. 17), Jessika Carter (No. 23) and Kaitlyn Davis (No. 35) from USC.

Even Davis is not guaranteed to make the Liberty's opening night roster, which will go just 11 players deep, and Martinez and Carter are long shots. Davis will be considered a roster candidate in 2025 at the earliest, according to the team.

“Marquesha is a talented player whose athleticism, length, creation off-the-dribble, and ability to get downhill all grade at the WNBA level, and she has all of the physical tools to develop into an elite perimeter defender,” Liberty general manager Jonathan Kolb said in a statement.

Abbey Hsu's journey to the WNBA

By Jonathan Lehman

WNBA fans, old and new. Connecticut Sun fans. Ivy League fans. Have we got a story for you.

Abbey Hsu became a WNBA draftee Monday when she was selected late in the third round (No. 34 overall) by the Sun out of Columbia.

Hsu's remarkable journey from South Florida, through violence and heartbreak, to Morningside Heights was captured in an excellent feature by The Post's Howie Kussoy earlier this season.

Now her path continues at a WNBA training camp.

Charisma Osborne's long wait is over

By Jonathan Lehman

Charisma Osborne, widely projected in the first round (including The Post's) or top of the second round, slid all the way to the third round, where she finally was selected No. 25 by the Phoenix Mercury.

Osborne was one of the draft prospects invited to Brooklyn, though the television cameras did her the favor of not dwelling on her long wait, Aaron Rodgers-style.

The Mercury will have a top-heavy roster with the likes of Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi and offseason acquisition Kahleah Copper, and there are spots up for grabs for Osborne, a hard-nosed former UCLA guard.

The rest of the third round:

26. Seattle Storm: Mackenzie Holmes, F, Indiana

27. Indiana Fever: Leilani Correa, G, Florida

28. Los Angeles Sparks: McKenzie Forbes, G, USC

29. Phoenix Mercury: Jaz Shelley, G, Nebraska

30. Washington Mystics: Nastja Claessens, G, Belgium

31. Minnesota Lynx: Kiki Jefferson, G, Louisville

32. Atlanta Dream: Matilde Villa, G, Italy

33. Dallas Wings: Ashley Owusu, G, Penn State

34. Connecticut Sun: Abbey Hsu, G, Columbia

35. New York Liberty: Kaitlyn Davis, G, USC

36. Washington Mystics: Angel Jackson, G, Jackson State

From spectator to draft pick

Kate Martin said she was at the WNBA draft to support her good friend and longtime Iowa teammate Caitlin Clark.

She had seats near the back of the auditorium.

Then, in the middle of the second round, with the No. 18 overall pick, Martin was drafted by the defending champion Las Vegas Aces.

The second-round picks

By Jonathan Lehman

13. Chicago Sky: Brynna Maxwell, G, Gonzaga

14. Seattle Storm: Nika Muhl, G, UConn

15. Indiana Fever: Celeste Taylor, G, Ohio State

16. Las Vegas Aces: Dyaisha Fair, G, Syracuse

17. New York Liberty: Esmery Martinez, F, Arizona

18. Las Vegas Aces: Kate Martin, G, Iowa

19. Connecticut Sun: Taiyanna Jackson, C, Kansas

20. Atlanta Dream: Isobel Borlase, G, Australia

21. Washington Mystics: Kaylynne Truong, G, Gonzaga

22. Connecticut Sun: Helena Pueyo, G, Arizona

23. New York Liberty: Jessika Carter, F, Mississippi State

24. Las Vegas Aces: Elizabeth Kitley, C, Virginia Tech

12. Atlanta Dream: Nyadiew Puoch, F, Australia

By Jonathan Lehman

The first round concludes with the third international selection of the draft.

Puoch, 19, has been playing professionally in Australia, and is said to have upside on the defensive end of the floor.

She elicited laughs when she turned around a leading question from ESPN's Holly Rowe: "How resilient are you."

"I'm alright, yeah," Puoch said.

11. New York Liberty: Marquesha Davis, G, Mississippi

The Liberty went for a premier defensive guard with their first-round pick.

Just not the one who many in the audience expected or hoped for.

With chants in Brooklyn for UConn's Nika Muhl, the Liberty instead opted for Davis, a 6-foot stopper who averaged 14 points per game as a fifth-year senior at Ole Miss.

ESPN's Rebecca Lobo called Davis "one of the best athletes in the draft," and compared her to All-Star wing Kahleah Copper.

The Liberty fans in attendance offered cheers for Davis in the end.

8. Minnesota Lynx: Alissa Pili, F, Utah ... 9. Dallas Wings: Carla Leite, G, France ... 10. Connecticut Sun: Leila Lacan, G, France

By Jonathan Lehman

Pili, a superb offensive prospect, finds a new home in Minnesota under Cheryl Reeve, one of the WNBA's best coaches.

The next two picks shouldn't be expected to appear in the WNBA this season.

The Wings and Sun, with little room left on their rosters, went the draft-and-stash route.

Leite and Lacan are high-upside prospects who likely will continue to play at least one more season in Europe before coming across the pond to try to break through in the WNBA.

7. Chicago Sky: Angel Reese, F, LSU

Angel Reese's slide down the board halted at No. 7.

And now the former LSU superstar is headed to the Windy City.

Reese will become teammates with Kamilla Cardoso, her one-time foil during LSU-South Carolina showdowns, and will be coached by Liberty legend Teresa Weatherspoon, now the Sky's head coach.

"I'm just so excited," Reese said. "Just coming in and being competitive, having an open mind every day to just want to work."

Clark: Get your Fever tickets now

Caitlin Clark has many skills: scoring, passing, selling tickets.

Clark put on her pitchwoman hat and shouted out Fever fans in the moments after she was drafted No. 1 overall by Indiana.

"I know they'll be supporting all summer long," Clark said. "Buy your tickets now. I know it will be a hot ticket."

She's not the only one hustling.

Check out this hype video the Fever released as they selected Clark:
