A New Fantasy Titan
It sure looks like rookie Vince Young has captured the same magic he had in college.
In two straight weeks, he has engineered game-winning rallies in the fourth quarter, against a pair of solid opponents â the Colts and Giants. In the two games combined, he has five total TDs (4 pass, 1 rush).
This week, he and the Titans take on the Texansâ 27th-ranked pass defense. So certainly, Young could be considered a decent starter this week, right?
Not so fast.
Sunday
Titans at Texans â Young has shown heâs going to be capable of some monster quarters, if not monster games. Heâs performance in the fourth quarter this season has been stellar (his QB rating is 82.0 in fourth, no better than 67.0 in any other quarter).
Why is that? This happens because defenses are playing in deeper and trying to cover more of the field to prevent the big play. This is a benefit to Young more than many QBs. Young doesnât have a rocket arm, so heâs not too big of a threat to consistently beat a defense with the deep ball, barring busted coverage. Though his arm isnât incredibly strong, he is highly accurate. With more room to run, his WRs have a better chance of getting open, so an accurate QB can pick apart a defense in 10- to 20-yard clips.
Also, Young can make plays with his legs. With defenses playing deeper and wider, there are more running lanes for Young to access.
Why is this important this week vs. the Texans? Well, chances are, the Titans wonât be playing from behind much. With a sound running game anchored by Travis Henry, Tennessee should be able to control the clock, and forge ahead. This means the Texans wonât be playing a loose or prevent-type defense. Youngâs WRs wonât be able to open as easily, so even an accurate QB will have limited success. And his running lanes will be more narrow as well, since there will likely be seven or eight defenders in the boxes, rather than five defensive backs on the field.
Young shouldnât struggle, necessarily. But donât expect a 20- or 30-point fantasy effort.
Good week for: Travis Henry, Wali Lundy, Andre Johnson
Bad week for: Drew Bennett
Expect average results from other players.
Ravens at Chiefs â Bad news for Larry Johnson owners, he will be hard-pressed to produce his 20-point average against one of the leagueâs best run defenses. Chiefs defense is not what one would call scary, but theyâre no pushovers either. Likely a low-scoring contest with limited fantasy impact.
Down week for: Larry Johnson
Bad week for: Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton, Eddie Kennison
Falcons at Buccaneers â Atlanta can stop the run somewhat, but is useless vs. the pass. The Bucs canât run the ball anyway, theyâre out of the playoff hunt, so what not air it out with young QB Brad Gradkowski? Heâs got to throw to someone, and the FT thinks it will be Joey Galloway. Both make decent back-end plays if your league starts three WRs or two QBs.
Good week for: Brad Gradkowski, Joey Galloway, Alge Crumpler
Bad week for: Warrick Dunn, Cadillac Williams
Colts at Jaguars â Colts canât stop the run, all the Jags can do is run. So tell me class, what should we expect from Jacksonville on Sunday? Thatâs right little Johnny. We can expect the Jags to run the ball. Fred Taylor is getting the bulk of the carries, but Maurice Jones-Drew is getting the bulk of the touchdowns. Either one is a decent play against the hapless Colts run D.
The only problem will be if the Colts jump out to an early lead. The FT isnât too worries, since the Jags always rise (or fall) to the level of their competition.
Good week for: Fred Taylor, Maurice Jones-Drew, Ben Utecht
Down week for: Peyton Manning, Joseph Addai
Bad week for: David Garrard
Vikings at Lions â Donât expect Chester Taylor to play, and even if he does, donât expect good fantasy result. This leaves Ciatrick Fason and Mewelde Moore to anchor the Vikings backfield vs. a less-than-impressive Detroit defense. Thereâs been much to-do about whoâs starting at QB for the Vikes, but chances are Brad Johnson, and we expect Johnson to do OK against a Lions pass defense that ranks in the bottom third of the league.
The Lions will be forced to throw the ball, rather than test Minnesotaâs top-ranked run-stopping unit.
Good week for: Jon Kitna, Roy Williams, Mike Furrey, Marcus Robinson, Ciatrick Fason
Bad week for: Kevin Jones
Patriots at Dolphins â The last thing Pats coach Bill Belichick needs is an edge. Heâs got one vs. the Dolphins â RB Ronnie Brown is out, and Miami has no quality backup. Without having to worry about the run, the Pats will blitz early and often, mix up multiple zone coverages to confuse the Dolphins QB and make it generally difficult for Miami to execute the passing game.
Without a running game to rely on, the Fins will have to throw, so their chances will be on the shoulders of, gulp, Joey Harrington. Expect turnovers, an early Pats lead, and a steady does of the New England ground game to follow. But be aware, Pats RB Laurence Maroney is questionable (back). After his big day last week, the Pats wonât be shy about handing off to Corey Dillon quite often.
Good week for: Corey Dillon
Bad week for: Joey Harrington, Chris Chambers, Marty Booker
Giants at Panthers â Itâs Team Turmoil vs. Team Temperamental. The Giants canât keep from bashing each other. The Panthers lack the passion to bash anything â save a Jake Delhomme penalty-begging temper tantrum or Keyshawn Johnson helmet toss.
Truth of the matter is, both of these teams are so inconsistent, itâs impossible to predict the outcome or fantasy impact with any certainty. But the FT is here to tell you, donât sell Panthers backup QB Chris Weinke short just yet. The FT says Weinke will turn in a competent, though not remarkable, outing. This is good news for the Cats, who are better off this week without a free-throwing Jake back there with a sore throwing hand. He makes enough errant throws when heâs healthy.
Speaking of errant throws, the Giants will send out Eli Manning. What Eli does best is execute fourth-quarter rallies. What the Panthers do best is allow fourth-quarter rallies. Plus, the Panthers CBs (Chris Gamble, Ken Lucas) are both banged up.
Good week for: Chris Weinke, Keyshawn Johnson, DeShaun Foster, Tiki Barber, Eli Manning, Jeremy Shockey
Bad week for: DeAngelo Williams, Brandon Jacobs
Eagles at Redskins â Eagles are on a short week coming off an emotional, come-from-behind victory Monday over Team Temperamental. They face a âSkins squad that hasnât looked near as bad the last two weeks.
The FT believes Jeff Garcia isnât as good as he looked Monday, be we also claim Brian Westbrook and Donte Stallworth are good, and can help Garcia overcome his deficiencies. Besides, we also donât believe the Redskins defense is as good as it looked two weeks ago vs. Team Temperamental, or for most of last week vs. the Falcons.
Good week for: Reggie Brown, Ladell Betts, Chris Cooley
Bad week for: Jason Campbell, Santana Moss
Raiders at Bengals â Donât look now, but the Raiders have the leagueâs best pass defense. This is like saying Halle Berry looked good in âCatwoman.â That may be true, but it doesnât change the fact that âCatwomanâ still stank.
Cincy, on the other hand, has the worst. If only the Raiders had someone on offense who could take advantage : (
Good week for: Rudi Johnson, Aaron Brooks
Down week for: Carson Palmer, Chad Johnson
Bad week for: T.J. Houshmandzadeh
Seahawks at Cardinals â Sure, Shaun Alexander had a blockbuster, 200-yard night a couple of weeks ago vs. the Packers. But take away that one game (mind you, he didnât score that night), and last yearâs TD record-setter hasnât had a game in which heâs scored 20 fantasy points in basic scoring leagues (heâs played in six total games).
But heâll have to compete with his own passing game, since the Cardinals donât do much to stop incoming air attacks.
Matt Leinart and the Cards will be playing catch-up much of the day â meaning pass, pass, pass.
Good week for: Matt Hasselbeck, Deion Branch, Matt Leinart, Bryant Johnson
Bad week for: Edgerrin James
Packers at 49ers â Speaking of the terrible Packer run defense, here comes Frank Gore. Actually, the Pack isnât that bad vs. the run (they rank in the middle of the pack). That wonât stop frank Gore from racking up his usual yardage, however.
The good news for Green Bay: San Fran canât stop the pass, so Brett Favre should have a good shot at rebounding from last week debacle vs. the Jets.
Good week for: Frank Gore, Antonio Bryant, Brett Favre, Greg Jennings
Bad week for: Ahman Green
Bills at Jets â J.P. Losman torched the Jets for more than 300 yards in Week 3. Donât get too excited, the FT doesnât see a repeat performance. But we do expect a nice afternoon from Willis McGahee against the poor Jets run defense.
That said, the Bills donât put up much ground resistance either. If only the Jets had a full-time featured ball carrier. Recent weeks have seen an increased role for Cedric Houston, and we see no reason why this wonât continue.
Good week for: Willis McGahee, Cedric Houston
Bad week for: Laveranues Coles, Jerricho Cotchery, Lee Evans
Broncos at Chargers â Denver has a rookie QB under center, one RB that has been injured much of the season, another who is a rookie, a streaky WR in his first year with the team, and not much else. San Diego has one of the best all-around defenses in the league.
We donât have to tell you about LaDainian Tomlinson (he burnt us last time he played Denver). But the Broncos arenât near the top of the league in pass defense, so expect Philip Rivers to get a couple of opportunities to make a big play.
Good week for: Philip Rivers, Eric Parker
Bad week for: Tatum Bell, Javon Walker
Saints at Cowboys â Dallas ranks high in most defensive categories. The Saints scorch the scoreboard weekly. So what will give come Sunday?
The New Orleans WRs are banged up again, so keep your eye on the status of Marques Colston and Joe Horn. If Colston plays, he must be in your lineup. If one or the other doesnât, get Devery Henderson in there. If both are out, Terrance Copper can be considered. But we donât recommend playing Horn, healthy or not.
Saints arenât great at stopping the run, but are fairly successful defending the pass.
Good week for: Deuce McAllister, Devery Henderson, Marion Barber
Down week for: Tony Romo
Bears at Rams â St. Louis is strong defending the pass, but they act as a sieve vs. the run. Chicago can defend everything.
Good week for: Cedric Benson
Down week for: Torry Holt, Steven Jackson
Bad week for: Marc Bulger, Rex Grossman, Bernard Berrian
