GIANT NOTES

ALBANY – Plaxico Burress impressed his new teammates and coaches by not missing a single workout after hyper-extending his knee during his very first training camp practice with the Giants. Burress, though, will not be able to defy the medical odds a second time.

The towering receiver suffered a strained hip flexor Tuesday night, was unable to work yesterday and will definitely miss time with this injury.

“It will be more than day-to-day, it will be a couple of days whether we can get a feel for if there’s any improvement there,” Tom Coughlin said.

Burress does not seem overly concerned. He said the hip feels tender and sore and is likely feeling that way because of too much running.

“The training staff is holding me out, I don’t want to go out and do something stupid,” Burress said. “It’s nothing real serious to worry about. I didn’t pull it or tear it, it just feels uncomfortable.”

Another receiver, Jamaar Taylor, is sidelined with a strained hip flexor. Rookie defensive end Eric Moore was carted off the field with what looked to be injuries to his left knee and ankle. He’ll have an MRI to determine the extent of the damage.

“He’s a young player who is making good progress,” Coughlin said of Moore. “He’s shown some good pass rush skills. That would be a setback. We’ll see.”

Massive rookie RB Brandon Jacobs finally got some heavy hitting in the first short-yardage and goal-line drills of camp. The 266-pound Jacobs got the first carry, buried his head and charged into the line, overpowering CB Corey Webster and then S Curry Burns to easily pick up the first down.

“I was glad to see him go in there; he went in there with some power,” Coughlin said. “That’s a very big plus. You take a look out there, so many times there’s an unblocked guy, you can’t block ’em all. Many times it’s a safety sitting in the hole. I would think he might have an advantage if it’s a safety sitting in the hole.”

Jacobs enjoyed the action.

“It kind of teased me a little bit because we only had a few plays,” he said. “It gave me a taste of what it’s like.”

In the two-minute drill, Jesse Palmer was intercepted by Burns on a deep sideline pass intended for Mark Jones.

Rookie RB Ryan Grant left early with a sprained ankle.
