Danny Almonte’s days at Monroe appear to be over, at least for now.

Almonte, who helped pitch Monroe to the PSAL championship a year ago, was signed out of the Bronx school yesterday by his legal guardian and former Little League coach, Rolando Paulino.

“It’s tough, because I treated him like a son,” Monroe head coach Mike Turo said of Almonte, who first gained notoriety after winning the Little League World Series despite being 14 years old in the 12-year-old league. “But this is what he wanted, so I had to let him go.”

Turo met with Paulino, as well as Almonte’s father – who is in the country from his native Dominican Republic on a temporary visa – yesterday for four hours.

According to Turo, Almonte will attend a Christian school in Hialeah, Fla., called American H.S.

“I have no idea where he’ll live,” Turo said. “He’d been at almost all of his classes, but we had been hearing this might happen.”

According to sources, Almonte’s primary objective in Florida will be to work out at major league camps under the tutelage of family friend Orlando Cepeda in hopes of being drafted in June. He turns 18 in April, so he would be draft-eligible this year.

However, there is a 30-day window in which Almonte could decide to come back to The Bronx and return to Monroe. The perennial power begins practice on March 1, but has already encountered more than a few problems.

In addition to Almonte’s departure, the Eagles have lost his former Little League teammate, Rocky Torres, who also moved to Florida in December. And since their field is being redone, all 51 games the team has scheduled will be on the road.

“It’s going to be hard,” Turo said. “But I love challenges.”
