This probably isn’t how Pedro Alvarez would have envisioned the start of his professional career, but the Washington Heights native finally has signed with the Pirates.

After being drafted with the No. 2 overall pick on June 5, Alvarez agreed to a contract at the Aug. 15 deadline, but then he and agent Scott Boras claimed the deadline passed and the players union filed a grievance with Major League Baseball.

That matter was settled yesterday, and Alvarez signed a four-year contract worth more than $6 million.

Alvarez, a Horace Mann graduate who starred at Vanderbilt, said Boras didn’t push him to file the grievance.

“Throughout the whole process, I wanted a fair trial and wanted it to play itself out,” Alvarez said. “I thought for myself and made decisions for myself. I’m completely satisfied.”

Alvarez will report to the team’s Instructional League in Bradenton, Fla., this weekend to begin his pro career, but time will tell how much the delay set back his development.

“I’ll play all winter if I have to so that I can move up as quick as possible,” the third baseman said. “But all of that is out of my hands.”
