Alyssa Naeher just went from the biggest question mark on the United States women’s national team to the biggest reason they are moving on to the World Cup final.
Naeher, the heavily scrutinized longtime understudy to Hope Solo, preserved Team USA’s tense 2-1 semifinal victory over England on Tuesday with a perfectly timed diving save on a penalty kick in the 84th minute.

The importance of that stop from the 31-year-old Connecticut native was not lost on the rest of Team USA.
“I just said, ‘That was your shining moment,'” head coach Jill Ellis said on the Fox broadcast. “What a frickin’ stop. It was unbelievable.”
“Honestly, she saved our asses,” said star forward Alex Morgan, who scored the eventual game-winning goal.
Naeher had made an even better save in the 33rd minute on a curling shot from Keira Walsh that seemed destined for the top right corner of the net and would have tied the game.

Naeher is playing in her first major tournament since taking over the No. 1 job from the controversial Solo following the disastrous 2016 Olympics. She committed a costly blunder in the Round of 16 against Spain, leading to a goal, which did little to erase the lingering doubts among observers about whether Naeher was ready for the biggest stage in the sport.
“Alyssa has come into this tournament without any World Cup or Olympic experience,” defender Becky Sauerbrunn said after the Spain game. “but I think she’s shown time and time again that she’s an excellent goalkeeper.”
She certainly did in the semis.
