American Pharoah is finishing his final preparations before his trip to Belmont Park for a shot at thoroughbred racing immortality.

After taking a mile-and-a-half gallop over the Churchill Downs surface in Louisville, Ky., the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner will have his final timed workout prior to the Belmont Stakes on Monday morning. After that, the plan is to ship the colt to Belmont Park for a Tuesday arrival somewhere between 1:45 p.m. and 3 p.m., according to Zayat Stables racing manager Justin Zayat.

Trainer Bob Baffert was on hand at Churchill on Sunday morning for the gallop, and said his charge is looking happy and healthy heading into Saturday’s $1.5 million Belmont Stakes.

“He looks like he’s getting ready for a work,” Baffert told reporters in Louisville. “He knows he’s getting close to a work so it’s getting pretty tough on him.”

American Pharoah’s last workout came on May 26, when he breezed four furlongs in 48.00 seconds, an impressive time for a workout. This time, Baffert said he is looking to see that American Pharoah is visually enjoying the work while still finding a high cruising speed.

“As long as he’s enjoying what he’s doing, that’s what you want to see,” Baffert said. “I’m looking forward to it and hope that it goes like it did last week. It went really smooth and you can tell he’s really enjoying it.”

American Pharoah’s workout Monday morning will happen close to 8:30 a.m. and be live streamed by Churchill Downs.

While the Triple Crown hopeful trains at Churchill, many of his Belmont competitors already are stationed at the Elmont track.

Wood Memorial winner Frosted, who finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby, is stabled at Belmont and worked out over the Belmont track on Friday. The gray colt also breezed four furlongs, but finished slightly faster than American Pharoah with a time of 47.84 seconds.

Another Belmont contender, Materiality, also worked over the Belmont track on Friday. The Todd Pletcher-trainee, who finished sixth in the Kentucky Derby after a stumble at the start, was slightly faster than Frosted as he recorded a four-furlong workout in 47.78 seconds.

A field of 10 is expected for the Belmont Stakes. Post positions will be drawn Wednesday morning.
