The ailing Red Sox had seen enough.

Not even halfway through the first game of a Saturday doubleheader between the Red Sox and Yankees in The Bronx, Boston manager Alex Cora and starting pitcher Chris Sale were ejected.

The Yankees had just taken a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when Cora came out of a huddle on the mound and yelled at home-plate umpire Mike Estabrook for his questionable strike zone. Breyvic Valera had just capitalized on a bases-loaded situation with a single to right, scoring Edwin Encarnacion, as the Yankees’ bats began to heat up.

Sale couldn’t escape the frame, and six runs later, he was in the middle of being taken out of the game when the lefty also gave it to Estabrook.

In Sale’s four starts against the Yankees this season, he has allowed six home runs with a 9.90 ERA through 20 innings. Boston entered Saturday on a five-game losing streak and trailed the first-place Yankees by 11¹/₂ games.
