SARATOGA SPRINGS – Jerry Bailey, who was aboard Back In Shape when she finished second but was disqualified and placed fourth for interfering with Pentatonic in the stretch drive of the Grade 1 Personal Ensign on Friday, was given a 10 day suspension by the stewards for that infraction. Bailey has appealed the suspension and a stay was granted.

D. Wayne Lukas was fined $500 for a display of temper following the running of the Ballerina Handicap last Sunday. Lukas had claimed foul on the eventual winner of the race, Dream Supreme, claiming interference in the stretch drive.

1ST RACE – Uncommon Valor has always been regarded as a potential stakes runner by Team Valor owner Barry Irwin. In his first start since breaking his maiden, he was facing tough competition, including stakes winners Shut Out Time and Hearts At Risk, who were eligible for this non-winners of one condition because their state-bred victories did not count against them for this race. Uncommon Valor trailed the field early and then was far back turning for home. He then put in a strong closing kick on the outside and got up to nip Famous Again at the wire for the victory. He does have a bright future and should get better going a one turn route at Belmont. Hearts At Risk saved ground early and then reached contention on the rail when entering the stretch. He had to check behind Peak Dancer but then angled outside to gain the lead in midstretch. But he tired late and finished fourth.

2ND RACE – Ensnare is a horse that will drive you crazy. She just doesn’t win for one reason or another. She rated off the pace in between horses and then angled inside in the stretch drive to go through a hole and gain the lead. She took the lead, but Westerville had clear run on the outside and gained the lead near the wire for the victory. Ensnare has ability, but it may be a while before we see her in the winner’s circle.

3RD RACE – Speightstown was a $2 million dollar yearling purchase making his debut for Todd Pletcher. He acted up a bit in the starting gate and raced greenly during the running of the race. He had nothing left turning for home and fell back to finish last. He obviously needs more seasoning and time to develop, mentally and physically.

4TH RACE – Iron Will rated off the pace and then angled wide turning for home. He closed well on the outside and gained the lead over Classy E.T. near the wire for the victory. It was his first victory since he defeated Artax on March 21 of last year. Ironically, Artax was paraded in the stretch after the running of this race, in his final public appearance before being shipped to Taylor Made Farm to prepare for his stud career. Testify broke sharply and set the pace with Too Costly to his outside. But fast fractions of :21 3/5 and :44 were too much for them.

5TH RACE – In Frank’s Honor broke well and relaxed early, with Bailey getting him to angle inside prior to entering the far turn. That was the key to the race as Hallucinogin, who was next to In Frank’s Honor, was bumped by Out of Fashion and then bore out to bump Mandarin Marsh. Turning for home, Bailey found a seam to go through and ran down Temptation Bound for the victory. Ekundu tried making a five wide move on the turn to reach contention but tired in the stretch drive.
