Baker Mayfield may still be tied to the Browns, but he’s keeping his distance from the team.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported on Wednesday that Mayfield is currently throwing with veteran wide receivers Cole Beasley, Danny Amendola and Alex Bachman in Texas while the Browns work on a trade.

Cleveland stunned the league earlier this month by trading for controversial Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Mayfield — the Browns’ first-overall pick in 2018 — demanded a trade shortly after, and has reportedly been linked to the Seahawks.

Although Mayfield wants out of Cleveland, it was reported Tuesday how it’s “entirely possible” that the Browns kick off the season with the 26-year-old quarterback still on the roster. Cleveland GM Andrew Berry said there’s no “specific timetable” for making a decision on Mayfield.

Mayfield suffered a torn labrum early in the 2021 season, which set him up to have his worst year as a pro to date. The Oklahoma product only threw 3,010 yards this past season – over 500 yards less than his career average of 3,531.

Watson, meanwhile, has since agreed to a record-breaking five-year, $230 million contract with the Browns, fully guaranteed. During his introductory press conference last week, Watson maintained his innocence amid lawsuits from 22 women alleging sexual assault.

He could still be suspended by the league regarding the active civil cases against him.
