It’s the sports world equivalent of a headless body in a topless bar.
Two Michigan high schools found themselves incomplete this season: The Glen Lake High School football team—the Lakers—lacked a band, and the Forest Area High School Marching Band lacked a football team.
The latter school’s season was canceled due to low player participation — until Glen Lake athletic director Mark Mattson reached out.
“I have never had another school’s athletic director call me up,” Forest Area band coach Brandon Deike tells The Post. “I put it out there, ‘Do you want to do this? Do you want to take the night?’ Everybody raised their hand and said yes.”
Cue the inevitable sports clichés.
Glen Lake’s Mattson tells CNN, “No Friday night football game under those lights is complete without your sideline cheer team and a marching band. It didn’t take long for the two schools to connect and become one in supporting each others’ cause.”
On Friday, the band from Fife Lake provided the live soundtrack for the Maple City team’s game and had a huge impact, Mattson says.
The Lakers handily defeated their opposing team, the Gladstone High School Braves, 31-7.
“I think it’s so cool that these kids can turn around with their instruments and make something special,” says Mattson, adding that the band is welcome back anytime.
Touchdown.
