Owner Goldenballs?

David Beckham said he’s considering purchasing an MLS team when his contract runs out.

“I still want to be involved. I want to be an ambassador of the league,” Beckham said yesterday. “There’s a deal in place where I can purchase an MLS team or start a franchise. It’s something I am definitely interested in, or I wouldn’t have it in my contract.”

We knew Beckham had the option to but a team, but Goldenballs has always been quiet about the details. Now he acknowledged that after his five-year, $32.5 deal runs out after the 2011 season, “the option is there.” But Becks _ who’ll be 36 by that time _ was noncommital about playing for his own team. He did say wife, Victoria, was excited about being named one of the guest American Idol judges to stand in for Paula Abdul after the latter’s contract negotiations fell apart.

“She’s really excited about that. Everyone’s sad to see Paula go, of course, because she was loved by so many people,” Beckham said. “Victoria has been given the chance to stand in and she’s looking forward to it.”

Could you see Beckham prying the Galaxy away from AEG after 2011? Or would you love to see him buy the Red Bulls? Figure it’s a lot more likely that he purchases an expansion team? Since he loves Brooklyn so much, maybe he could get done the deal Nets’ owner Bruce Ratner hasn’t been able to…
