BEEM, FUNK DARE TO DREAM
CHASKA, Minn. – Justin Leonard, Tiger Woods and Mark Calcavecchia have all won at least one major championship. Fred Funk and Rich Beem haven’t given up hope they can win their first today in the 84th PGA Championship at Hazeltine National.
Beem, at 6-under after 54 holes, will start today three strokes behind Leonard, who leads the tournament at 9-under. Funk is four shots back at 5-under. They are the unlikeliest contenders going into the final round today.
“Obviously, I’ve got to play well with Justin playing as well as he has,” said Funk, who shot a 1-over 73 in the third round after owning a share of the lead after each of the first two rounds.
“Justin is awfully strong when you have conditions like this. I could see 10-under winning unless Justin gets really comfortable with everything and just take off with it.”
The 47-year-old Funk had an up-and-down third round yesterday with three bogeys and two birdies. He received plenty of crowd support throughout his round.
“I think the looseness that I showed and the fun and the enthusiasm I’ve been showing all week, it’s going over to the fans and they are having a good time, too,” Funk said. “I kind of feel like how Freddie Couples must feel when you hear, ‘Freddie,’ all day long. I’ve always been the other Fred.”
Beem, who shot an even par 72 yesterday, had a two-stroke lead after six holes and got to 8-under before losing two strokes with bogeys at the par-4 14th and the par-3 17th. He will be paired with Leonard today.
“I’m looking forward to finding out exactly what it takes to win a major,” said Beem, who three weeks ago won The International, his second PGA Tour victory. “I would expect the winner to come out of our group.”
Funk will be paired today with Woods. They are friends, so he won’t be intimidated.
“I love watching good golf,” Funk said, “even if it’s my opponent.”
