BEJARANO RIDES THREE WINNERS
ST RACE – Field was tightly bunched down backside as Platitude, 3-5 under Aaron Gryder dropping from 18G to 12.5G for Scott Lake, moved through along rail to duel for lead with Crafty Player, 5-2 with Rafael Bejarano up. When Crafty Player dropped over and gunned to front heading into turn, Platitude checked slightly, and race was all but over as Crafty Player opened daylight, then held off late charge of Golden Diamond.
ND RACE – Two straight for leading rider Bejarano, riding One and Done, gelding dropping back to 14G after being claimed by Gary Gullo from Joe Orseno for 17.5G out of race he was beaten 46 lengths. Bejarano took One and Done outside down backside sitting off pace, rallied four wide far turn, drew off. Race would have been closer, but Extra Fit, Shaun Bridgmohan up, was in traffic turning for home, steadied while waiting for hole to open, gunned through up rail mid-stretch, finished fast for second, galloped out in front. Top Bunk, 6-5 favorite, also lacked running room in stretch.
TH RACE – Gary Contessa first-time starter Precise Strike threw fit before loading into gate, was off slowly, finished with good energy, but stablemate Vertical Storm, also making debut, saved day for entry with Ariel Smith up; dueled for early lead outside Keepswooinshoes and Champagne Ending, took command around turn, drew off. If It’s Meant to B, favored at 6-5, tucked in behind pace duel, rallied on turn, was along for second; third runner-up finish in last four.
TH RACE – Four late scratches reduced field to five. Glittering Racket, claimed last out by Dominic Galluscio after blowing 4 1/2-length lead in final furlong, shaped up as lone speed, was 6-5 choice switching riders from Jose Bermudez to Bejarano. She opened daylight, but Ace’s Cappella, Norberto Arroyo up, kept her in sights, moved up outside to press Glittering Racket entering turn, dueled around turn, down stretch, edged late. Vroom Hilda, making late run under Eriluis Vaz, loomed boldly mid-stretch, lacked late kick.
TH RACE – Field reduced to four by five late scratches. Bejarano picked up mount on Mackinac after Alan Garcia sprained thumb riding in fourth race. Mackinac, claimed by Robert Bailes from D. Wayne Lukas last out, dropped back to trail field as True Call and Sahm Iahm dueled for lead, rallied on far turn to collar 1-2 favorite New Age soon after he went to front turning for home, drew off like Forego down stretch under strong urging, giving Bejarano hat trick.
