FORT WORTH, Texas — The Big 12 Conference may be reconsidering how to declare its champion after being left out of the four-team college football playoff.
Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says it’s clear his league was penalized for not having a championship game when co-champions Baylor and TCU weren’t in the top four Sunday.
Bowlsby says the selection committee’s decision will cause the Big 12 “to go back to the drawing board a little bit and talk about whether or not we need to think about a different model.”
The Big 12 is the only one in the big five leagues without a championship game, but plays a round-robin schedule. Baylor and TCU were co-champions, even with the Bears’ head-to-head win over the Horned Frogs.
The top four were Alabama, Oregon, Florida State and Ohio State, all who won conference championship games.
