Bill Simmons tanked in front of the camera, but HBO is banking on him to succeed behind it.

Simmons has signed a new contract with HBO, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The deal calls for the one-time blogger to continue producing sports content for the premium network, including series, films and documentaries.

The news comes some two years after Simmons’ HBO talk show, “Any Given Wednesday,” was canceled in the middle of its first season.

The new deal also follows the successful, Simmons-produced documentary “Andre the Giant,” on the life of the popular professional wrestler, which aired in April. It was the most-watched documentary in the history of HBO Sports, and Simmons’ first project with the network.

Since launching ESPN’s 30 for 30 series in 2009, Simmons has shined in the documentary field.

“I’m thrilled to keep going with the HBO family and can’t wait to get started on a couple of the more ambitious projects we’ve hatched,” Simmons said.

Simmons, 48, is also founder and CEO of The Ringer, a sports and pop culture website that’s home to a popular podcast network. HBO injected a small investment into the site as part of Simmons’ arrival, and the podcast network received 32 million downloads last year. Some 1.2 million of those came from Simmons’ own show.

The famous Boston fan is also planning to replicate the 30 for 30 series at his new site, with the recent launch of Ringer Films. Simmons didn’t get the chance to stick around for the growth of the ESPN series after multiple controversies and suspensions brought his 14-year career with the network to an end in 2015.
