The strangest sports story of 2021 keeps getting stranger.

Bishop Sycamore, the “high school” that allegedly conned its way into getting embarrassed by powerhouse IMG Academy on national television, fired their coach Roy Johnson after some bizarre details emerged about the Ohio-based football program. Tyren Jackson, the team’s new head coach, decided to set the record straight in an interview with NBC4.

“We do not offer curriculum,” Jackson said. “We are not a school. That’s not what Bishop Sycamore is, and I think that’s what the biggest misconception about us was, and that was our fault. Because that was a mistake on paperwork.”

You read that right – they admitted they are not a school. Per the report, Bishop Sycamore was classified as a “non-charter, non-tax supported school” by the state of Ohio in the previous school year, but it was due to a mistake in paperwork. Jackson instead described Bishop Sycamore as a “post-grad football academy.”

Jackson said they will not file the paperwork to declare themselves as a school for the current academic year, and that whoever did so last year did it before he arrived. When asked about a report that they had an official bell schedule and address, Jackson said, “I don’t know anything about that.

“I won’t speak on stuff I don’t know about. Like I said, if it was something that happened like that, then that’s terrible. That’s not how you do business.”

It of course begs the question as to why, then, Bishop Sycamore was playing other high schools over the past two years. Several actual schools have cancelled games against them in the coming weeks amid the national fallout.

“A lot of it, you can say, was self-inflicted, and I’m willing to say that,” Jackson said. “But at the same time, that’s probably from a head-down type of thing. Don’t attack these kids. Don’t take that part from them, now that they don’t have a season, possibly. Once the smoke clears, we’re national news. Whoever does schedule us next will be national news.”

Jackson took over after Johnson went out in a blaze of glory following the ESPN drubbing, with the school’s director Andre Peterson citing pending fraud charges and the school’s injury tracking as reasons for his dismissal. Outkick also reported that Johnson failed to appear in court over a domestic violence charge.

Ohio governor Mike DeWine has opened up a state investigation into Bishop Sycamore, and the fallout will likely continue as that progresses.
