PHOENIX -Bobby Valentine doesn’t usually give away his original lineup cards, but he was willing to make an exception after Al Leiter’s gem Tuesday night.

With a 10-1 victory over Arizona Tuesday night, Leiter became the first man in major league history to defeat all 30 teams. Valentine told reporters he’d give Leiter the lineup card because “when you’re the first ever to do something, it’s a great accomplishment.”

Told that his skipper appreciated the accomplishment and wanted to give him a gift from the victory, Leiter responded, “That would be nice.” He also joked of his feat, “Maybe they should contract right now.”

The more you wrap your mind around what Leiter did, the more amazing it becomes. Four other pitchers have defeated 29 of the 30 teams: Randy Johnson (hasn’t beaten Arizona), Kevin Brown (Tampa Bay), Hideo Nomo (Los Angeles) and Ken Hill (who is now retired). The opportunity to beat 30 teams has only been present since 1998, when Arizona and Tampa Bay started franchises.

Leiter found out when ESPN announced the accomplishment on Tuesday night’s SportsCenter. He said it was a testament to his “longevity and perseverance.”

“Most of my success has come in the last six or seven years, so that makes it that much more special,” Leiter said.

Rey Ordonez (left oblique) was able to throw and field but couldn’t hit. He was out of the lineup for the second straight game. John Valentin started at short.
