BOREL’S BACK ON ‘BIRD’
SARATOGA SPRINGS — Mine That Bird will be reunited with his Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Calvin Borel when he runs in the Oct. 10 Goodwood at Santa Anita, a prep for the Nov. 7 Breeders’ Cup Classic, trainer Chip Woolley said yesterday.
Borel was aboard yesterday when he breezed Mine That Bird a half-mile in :51.16 over the main track here. The gutsy gelding was scheduled to leave at 3 a.m. this morning for a flight back to New Mexico, where he will lead the post parade for Monday’s All-American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs. Mine That Bird will train there until leaving for California, Woolley said.
Mike Smith, who rode Mine That Bird to a second-place finish in the Preakness when Borel opted to ride the super filly Rachel Alexandra to her historic victory in that race, was named to ride Mine That Bird in last Saturday’s Travers, but the Derby winner was withdrawn after undergoing throat surgery.
