A light-heart segment about a fan eating mayonnaise straight out of the jar has led to a Boston host apologizing.

The NESN segment, titled “The Social Stretch,” showed a fan eating at a Memphis Redbirds game and spilling some of the condiment on his shirt. While live on air on Monday night, McDonnell referred to the fan’s shirt as a “guinea tee” and some fans were outraged.

”Kacie McDonnell on NESN just said ‘guinea tee,’ that is god damn ridiculous. Can NESN do anything right at all?” one fan wrote on Twitter.

The use of the word “guinea” is a derogatory term used to describe Italians.

McDonnell issued an apology on NESN just before her regular segment during Tuesday’s Red Sox-Twins game.

“I’d like to take a minute to apologize to our viewers in particular those who I offended by an insensitive comment in my report (Monday) night,” McDonnell said. “There’s no excuse for my use of hurtful words and again for that, I am truly, truly sorry.”

It is unclear if McDonnell will face disciplinary action.
