If Mickey Mantle played today, he would be “good.” If Sandy Koufax pitched today, he would be “good.”

Crazy talk? Perhaps, but former Yankee hurler Jim Bouton said both of those things yesterday before Old-Timers Day at the Stadium yesterday.

Thank goodness he stopped before he got to Tony Kubek.

“Players today are better than we were,” said Bouton, who pitched for the Yankees from 1962-68. “Our great players would only be good today. [Today’s players] aren’t as good at doing the little things. They’re not sacrificing. But if old guys from 1960 played against guys from today, we’d score three or four runs doing the little things and we’d lose 12-3. The weight training in the game helps the hitters more than the pitchers. There’s not a generation of guys who can’t pitch anymore.”

But Bouton, who authored the controversial book “Ball Four” that exposed the players’ personal lives, wasn’t entirely complimentary of the current game.

“Now they have the bat flips after they hit the ball that they practice in the mirror,” Bouton said. “They’re performers. With adjusting the batting gloves, they could take an hour off the game if they eliminated velcro.”
