AUGUSTA, Ga. — Brooks Koepka recounted a story about a time when he was a kid and he asked Phil Mickelson for an autograph at the Masters and was snubbed. The irony is Mickelson signs more autographs than anyone in the game.
“I was standing by the old range, and somehow found my way kind of right by the parking lot or something like that and asked him for an autograph and he said, ‘No,’ and he turned me down,’’ Koepka said Tuesday. “[I’m] probably about the only kid Phil’s ever turned down. He told me years later that I shouldn’t have been in the parking lot, so fair enough.
“I told him, I think in 2014 when we were playing a practice round at the British Open, ‘Listen, man, you stiffed me, and I really didn’t like you for a long time.’ He was typical Phil — went right back at me, [saying] I shouldn’t have been there. We can laugh about it now. I’ve got his autograph now.’’
Mickelson laughed at the memory, saying, “Well he shouldn’t have been there [in the parking lot]. I think I told him that, too.’’
Asked if he has Koepka’s autograph, Mickelson said: “I have it a bunch. We have team flags from Ryder Cups, Presidents Cups, all that kind of stuff that we’ve shared, absolutely. I’m proud to have them.’’
Asked if he got Koepka’s autograph in a parking lot, Mickelson said, “I did it in the appropriate location.’’
