Ch. 5’s newsroom Wednesday night was “swamped with angry calls,” according to station sources, after it ran a new promo for the station’s Yankee telecasts that favorably equated the team with Jesus Christ.

The Ch. 5-produced spot, playing to the sound of the “Hallelujah Chorus,” referred to the team as “the King of Kings” and included an invocation-like narration that the Yanks “will reign forever and ever. Hallelujah!”

“The phones started ringing like crazy,” said one source. “In just a matter of minutes we got, I’d say, 20 calls. And they kept coming.” The promo aired at least twice, starting on the 10 o’clock news. Fox-owned Ch. 5 this season will air 50 Yankee games.

Ch. 5 yesterday did not return calls seeking the station’s official response.
