CAMPANILE WINS SMITHWICK
SARATOGA SPRINGS – In the horse-for-the-course hall of fame here, the jumper Campanile is a deserving member.
Last summer, the 6-year-old Lear Fan gelding went 2-for-2 over the fences taking the A.P. Smithwick and New York Turf Writers handicaps.
Yesterday, Campanile won the Grade 2, $75,000 Smithwick Memorial again, splitting horses under Blythe Miller to open a daylight lead midway through the 2 1/16-mile steeplechase, then turning back a challenge from Golden Rule on the final turn before drawing clear to win by 2 3/4 lengths over the boggy course.
“He had run poorly on soft turf before and I was debating whether to scratch him,” said trainer Janet Elliot. “But he had two things going for him. He likes Saratoga, and I knew if he could get to the lead and rate, he would have a good chance.
“He ran super and was jumping like a deer.”
Campanile, who was giving from four to 12 pounds to his six opponents as the 158-pound highweight, paid $6.50. Golden Rule finished well clear in second to complete a $25.40 exacta.
