‘CATOMINE’ POINTS TO DERBY
Sweet Catomine, runaway winner of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Lone Star Park, could run again this year in Dec. 19 Hollywood Starlet, according to trainer Julio Canani. In any case, it seems certain she’ll be pointed for next year’s Kentucky Derby.
“The question is whether we give her a break here before we run against the boys,” said her owner, Marty Wygod.
2ND RACE – Bizzi Trick, even money under Jorge Chavez in five-horse field of 2-year-old $60,000 claimers, came through along rail down backside to duel with Downthehill, checked in tight quarters on turn, tried to re-rally turning for home, ran out of gas, faded to fourth. Jersey shipper Fierro’s Choice, first time for tag, trained field early, launched bid inside around turn, swung out top of stretch, closed like freight train down center of track, first win of hat trick for Pablo Fragoso.
3RD RACE – Island Charm went turf-to-dirt, finally broke maiden in 11th start; sat outside under strong hold by Norberto Arroyo Jr. tracking pace set by Hell Roaring Creek, moved up to bid for lead midway of turn, quickly took command and drew off as much best.
4TH RACE – Dancin On Broadway, adding Lasix off close second in debut, was hammered to 2-5 under Cornelio Velazquez. He pressed pace wide to turn, surged to front, easily opened daylight top of stretch, then lost focus and nearly lost race as first-time starter Pretty Partisan, hugging rail all way, came flying late, quickly cut into winner’s margin, fell short by length.
5TH RACE – Eye Dazzler, multiple graded-stakes placed filly, was 9-5 under Fragoso making second start back off long layoff, pressed early pace, cruised to lead far turn, splashed home by daylight. Strategy, favored at 7-5 with John Velazquez up, was wide most of way, finished well for place.
8TH RACE – Most exciting race at Big A since Proud Appeal and Cure the Blues went head-to-head start-to-finish in 1981 Gotham. Take Achance On Me, 17-1 under Cornelio Velasquez, broke on top, was quickly joined to his inside by 9-5 First Blush, Eibar Coa up, and those two ding-donged all way around track. First Blush held slight advantage to mid-stretch, when Take Achance On Me surged to poke head in front, but First Blush dug in, came again, was pulling away at wire. Overlooked in speed duel was fact Gracious Humor rallied strongly for third.
