The Red Bulls should have pretty close to a full team by tomorrow’s practice. A bevy of players away either for international duty of paperwork issues _ or both _ are filtering in either today or tomorrow, including Andrew Boyens, Albert Celades, Jorge Rojas and Carlos Johnson.
After playing with Venezuela and New Zealand respectively on Tuesday, Rojas and Boyens both practiced today. Johnson, who got his P-1 yesterday morning and didn’t dress for Costa Rica’s 1-0 World Cup qualifying win over El Salvador last night, is flying today and should practice tomorrow.
And Celades landed in New York late yesterday afternoon, and will have to pass a fitness test. The 33-year-old hasn’t played an official game since the end of the Real Zaragoza’s 2007-08 season in Spain; still, he could be a huge boon for the midfield.
“Albert will be back. We’ll see what the medical department says his state is, what his chances are of playing a role or part in Sunday’s game,” said Juan Carlos Osorio. I’d wager on his playing a big part.
Osorio thinks he can play a second midfielder in a 4-4-2 _ think the bottom of a diamond _ but it sounds like he really loves the idea of the Spaniard as one of the two attacking midfielders in a 4-3-3 with a ball-winning destroyer behind them like Seth Stammler or Luke Sassano.
I asked if he thought there was enough work rate between the 30somethings Rojas and Celades to pair them together in the Red Bulls’ most skilled central midfield tandem, and this was the response:
“It will be good if we can have somebody like Seth Stammler in behind them, or we can have Luke Sassano, because I think then those two balance the other two out,” Osorio said. And what about everybody’s favorite Argentine, Juan Pietravallo?
“No disrespect to Juan, but I think he’s better off (paired with somebody). It’s hard for him to play there alone. If he plays alongside someone else, then it’s a different story. It will depend on how we use the players. But I yes, I can see them playing together in specific games and specific situations. If you go back in preseason there was a chance we played with them and we did quite well.”
This is how that could work:
_____________Angel__________
___Kandji___________Richards__
___Rojas____________Celades__
____________Sassano__________
_Goldthwaite____________Hall___
_______Mendes____Petke_______
___________Cepero____________
Of course, things could change. This is considering Jon Conway is still suspended and Seth Stammler is fast-improving but unlikely to start, according to both Osorio and the midfielder itself. It also considers Johnson hasn’t had a single practice yet, and Alfredo Pacheco is still awaiting his P-1 visa. It’s just one possibility for that 4-3-3 Sunday, and a tantalizing one.
