St. Joseph by the Sea opened defense of its CHSAA Class AA intersectional title in style, defeating Staten Island rival Moore Catholic, 5-0, Thursday afternoon in Travis.
Left-hander Anthony DeMonte was dominant, tossing a complete-game, one-hitter, only once allowing a runner to reach second base. The senior had two strikeouts with just two walks.
Pete Padovano provided all the offense the Vikings, ranked No. 1 in the CHSAA by The Post, would need with a two-run single to left in the second to give Sea, which scored an unearned run in the top of the first, a 3-0 lead.
Liam Vogt was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Vin Garcia and Rob Crocitto added an RBI apiece in the seventh for the Vikings (1-0).
John Baggs allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits, striking out four with two walks in five innings. Dom Casella allowed two earned runs on three hits in two innings of relief for No. 6 Moore (0-1).
Fordham Prep 7, Regis 1: Jimmy McCormack pitched a complete-game, one-hitter, striking out 11 with two walks, Sal Annunziata had a double, a triple and an RBI, Vinny Capone had two hits and two RBIs and Alex O’Neill added two hits and an RBI for No. 4 Fordham Prep (1-1) Thursday afternoon at Randall’s Island. Kevin Ames gave up three runs, one earned, on six hits, striking out two and walking one in six innings for No. 8 Regis (0-1), which hurt itself with six errors.
All Hallows 6, Iona Prep 1: St. Louis-bound James Norwood pitched six shutout innings, Juliane Mateo went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Roger Ramos had an RBI double and Phoenix Deshamps had a double to lead No. 10 All Hallows in a season-opening win against No. 9 Iona Prep Thursday afternoon. Christian Fiorito had a double and Sam Garito drove in a run for Iona Prep.
Xavier 5, Archbishop Stepinac 2: Jon Paul Ramirez had a three-run home run, Danny D’Angelo and Alex Tactuk each had RBIs and Sean Meekins struck out 12 in a complete-game victory for No. 3 Xavier (2-0) Thursday afternoon. Greg DiGiacinto and Nick Euvino had an RBI apiece for No. 7 Stepinac (1-1).
Salesian 3, LaSalle 2: Joe Miressi allowed two earned runs and struck out five in five innings, Gabe Cabrales tossed a scoreless sixth inning with one strikeout and John Michael Brumaghin, who had an RBI, struck out the side in the seventh to earn the save. Brendan Silverberg had three walks and three runs scored and Steven Zadrima threw out two runners attempting to steal for Salesian (1-0) in its season opener Thursday afternoon.
