CHSAA softball rankings
Inclement weather put a damper on what should have been a big week in the CHSAA.
Rain caused the cancellation of rivalry games between St. Francis Prep and Mary Louis and St. Joseph by the Sea and Moore Catholic, which will be made up on May 2. The Vikings and Mavericks head to Herkimer for games in the Mudville Softball tournament Monday and Tuesday. No. 2 Archbishop Molloy and No. 4 St. Francis Prep play the biggest game of a quiet Easter week Monday, while rivals No. 6 Preston and new No. 10 Cardinal Spellman play Tuesday.
Check out this week’s version:
1. St. Joseph by the Sea (5-0) (Last week: 1)
The Vikings’ game with rival Moore Catholic was rained out Saturday. If the two rivals wanted they could make it up in Herkimer this weekend as they head to the Mudville tournament. Sea, which picked up a key win over St. John Villa, will play four games up there to further get the team battle tested for a another postseason run.
Next: @ St. Joseph Hill (April 25, 3 p.m.)
2. Archbishop Molloy (4-0) (2)
After a light week the Stanners will get their first crack at rival St. Francis Prep on Monday with both still unbeaten in league play. Freshman Taylor Moss continued her hot start with a grand slam and six RBIs in a lopsided win over St. Edmund last week. Maria Palmeri and Victoria Goldbach have rounded into form in the circle just in time for the bulk of the schedule.
Next: No. 4 St. Francis Prep (April 18, 3:45 p.m.)
3. Moore Catholic (6-1) (3)
The last time Moore Catholic played St. John Villa it won 14-11 marathon in come-from-behind fashion. Thursday’s 4-1 victory was much more economical as the Mavericks handled the Bears’ small ball game. Gianna DeCesare allowed just five hits and struck out five and will lead the team into the Mudville Softball tournament starting Monday.
Next: Notre Dame Academy (April 26, 4 p.m.)
4. St. Francis Prep (3-0) (4)
The Terriers are off to a good start and have proven they can score runs up and down the lineup. They did just that in a 7-3 win over visiting Bishop Kearney on Monday, before seeing their game with Mary Louis rained out Wednesday. Katie Derby will need to continue her stellar job in the circle if SFP wants to make an early statement against its rivals.
Next: @ No. 2 Archbishop Molloy (April 18, 3:45 p.m.)
5. Mary Louis (3-1) (5)
Rain halted what could have been a big week for the Hilltoppers by canceling games against rival St. Francis Prep and Bishop Kearney. TMLA did pick up an 11-1 win over St. Edmund in a rematch of last year’s CHSAA Brooklyn/Queen quarterfinals. Julie Canova had two hits and four RBIs.
Next: @ Christ the King (April 20, 3:45 p.m.)
6. Preston (5-0) (6)
Coach Rachel Mazza has raved about Megan Kelly’s improvement this season and the sophomore is certainly proving her right. She was 4-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI in the Panthers’ two wins last week. Laura Montalto continues to rake. She was 4-of-9 with a two-run homer. Preston gets a rematch with rival Spellman on Tuesday.
Next: Maria Regina (April 18, 4 p.m.)
7. St. John Villa (2-3) (7)
Brittany Smith, Melanie Boland and company have proven they are one of the city’s most dangerous teams. But the Bears haven’t been able to pick up a win over an elite squad. They nearly knocked off Moore Catholic for the second straight time, but fell 4-1. Villa hung tight with St. Joseph by the Sea before a five-run fifth turned into an 8-0 loss.
Next: @ Notre Dame Academy (April 20, 4 p.m.)
8. St. Joseph Hill (2-2) (8)
Hill is still in search of a signature win and missed out on another chance last week. The Hilltoppers dropped a 7-5 decision to traditional PSAL and Staten Island power Susan Wagner and star Taylor Sarcone. Coach Joe Wuensch’s club gets a breather from league play until a matchup with No. 1 St. Joseph by the Sea next week.
Next: No. 1 St. Joseph by the Sea (April 25, 4 p.m.)
9. Bishop Kearney (1-3) (9)
Alyssa McDonald showed flashed of brilliance against St. Francis Prep, but a rough start was too much for the Tigers to overcome in an eventual 7-3 loss. A chance to beat another Queens team, Mary Louis, was washed away by the rain Saturday. It makes the trip to Middle Village to play Christ the King on Monday that much more important.
Next: @ Christ the King (April 18, 3:45 p.m.)
10. Cardinal Spellman (2-2) (NR)
The Pilots are starting to jell. Two weeks ago they played right with league power Preston and fell just 3-2 against defending champion Our Lady of Victory. Victoria Quinones was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Taylor Addison drove in two runs in a 13-2 pounding of DeWitt Clinton in a non-league last week.
