JET NOTES

Two of the NFL’s best receivers will be on display Sunday at Giants Stadium, where the Jets and Lions will play – Laveranues Coles for the Jets and Roy Williams for the Lions.

But Coles, who’s third in the NFL with 38 receptions and second in receiving yards with 537, doesn’t consider himself among the league’s elite, nor does he consider that of Williams, who’s sixth in catches (36) and first in yards (554).

“No, I haven’t done enough in this game to even be compared (to them),” Coles said yesterday. “The things those guys have done and the numbers that they’ve put up are amazing. Like Marvin Harrison what he has done with Peyton Manning over there with the Colts, all you can do is look at it and admire. Those guys are putting themselves, in my book, in the Hall of Fame already and they’re still just touching the tip of the iceberg with their potential and the things that they can do in this league.

“When you start talking about those guys, neither me nor Roy has any business trying to put ourselves on the level with them.” Coles, in fact, revealed a serious lack of self confidence when he arrived to the league.

“Truthfully? I thought if I was starting for a team then my team must really be sorry,” Coles said.

“That’s the truth, to be honest, when I came in, I wasn’t brought in to be a wide receiver, I was brought in to be a kick returner.”

The Jets have been outscored 353 in the first quarter this season and, dating back to last season, have not scored a first-quarter TD in 20 games. Last Sunday, they scored for the first time all season in the first quarter with a 33-yard Mike Nugent FG.

“We’ve faced some pretty tough defenses, so you have to give the defense credit – Miami is an excellent defense, Jacksonville, Indianapolis, New England, Buffalo; you go down the list and they have done a really good job of playing good team defense,” Chad Pennington said. “I thought it was important last week that we did get points on our first possession in the first half, and we also got points on our first possession in the second half. So that was a step in the right direction.”
