A scary incident recently unfolded at the Vuelta a Colombia annual cycling race, when athlete Luis Carlos Chia crashed into his wife at the finish line following his stage-three win.

Claudia Roncancio, a cyclist-turned-photographer who often chronicles her husband’s cycling career, required medical attention and was taken to a hospital, according to The Sun.

She reportedly needed multiple stitches for a wound sustained in the crash.

The unfortunate turn of events began toward the end of the race, as Colombian cyclist Chia, 25, crossed the finish line and raised his arms to celebrate, per Cycling Weekly, with Roncancio “standing around 20 meters behind the finish line.” Chia apparently could not swerve in time to avoid a collision, having moved more rapidly than anticipated.

Chia, who currently rides for the Colnago CM Team, said rainy weather conditions and trouble with his brakes contributed to the crash.

“I wanted to brake but the bike didn’t respond,” said Chia. “I hit my wife but it could have just as easily have been another person.”

Chia also spoke to a Colombian newspaper about his wife’s condition, per The Sun.

“The doctors have checked her and more than anything it was the shock of it,” Chia said.
