OMAHA, Neb. – Natalie Coughlin and Aaron Peirsol continued the world record-breaking trend at the U.S. Olympic Trials, and Michael Phelps qualified for his second event in Beijing here last night.

Coughlin and Peirsol each broke their own records in the 100-meter backstroke, the fifth and sixth world marks to fall this week. Phelps just missed breaking his own record in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:44.10. The Baltimore swimmer is on a quest to top Mark Spitz’s 1972 standard of seven swimming gold medals.

Coughlin became the first woman to break 59 seconds, dropping the world record for the second time in two days, with a time of 58.97. Peirsol lowered his mark with a time of 52.89.
