The Post continues its profiles of each of the nine Breeders’ Cup races to be run Saturday, Oct. 25 at Santa Anita. The Countdown to the Cup spotlights potential nice-price winners as handicapped by reporter Ed Fountaine and columnist Ray Kerrison. Today, we focus on the Mile, followed by the Juvenile, Juvenile Turf, Sprint, Turf and the Classic. Good luck.
Three-year-olds & up. Purse: $2 million. Distance: Mile (Turf). Post
time: 3:15 p.m. Bets: WPS, exacta, trifecta, superfecta, Pick 3, Ultra Pick
6, Daily Double.
ANALYSIS: Every year, Cup races on the turf seem to be dominated
by European shippers. The one exception: when the Cup is run in
California. While they have taken a few turfers out West, the Europeans
do much better in the East.
Still, they are sending a topline filly in Goldikova for the Mile, and
she is strictly the one to beat. She has won her past three races, all at
a mile, two of them Grade 1’s, all in France. Before that, she ran third
behind Europe’s filly of the age, Zarkava. She comes out of the powerful
Freddie Head stable.
Kip Deville, from the people who gave us Big Brown, will be back to
defend his title, after winning the Mile last year over the Monmouth Park
bog. He flopped last out at Woodbine when the 1-2 favorite, but has since
worked well. He’s not out of this with Rick Dutrow at the switch.
LIVE LONGSHOTS: None may be better than Precious Kitten, a
mare, whose trainer, Bobby Frankel, insists she’s competitive with the
boys here. Frankel is never to be dismissed lightly. Whatsthescript was
a killer at Del Mar and Thorn Song is in career best form.
THE BET: If she handles the travel, Goldikova should beat this field.
Put her on top of the three longshots listed above in the exotics.
TOMORROW: Ed Fountaine on the Juvenile.
