It is starting to feel like a matter of when, not if, “Prime Time” will have the opportunity to head to the Power Five.

Deion Sanders, NFL Hall of Famer and current head football coach at Jackson State University, is a candidate for the vacant TCU job, according to a report from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

“I’m not saying he is going to get the job, not saying he’s the leading candidate at this point,” a TCU source told the outlet. “But he is in the mix.”

The TCU job is vacant after the school parted ways with Gary Patterson last week. Patterson had been the Horned Frogs’ head coach for more than 20 years.

Jackson State is 8-1 and 6-0 in SWAC conference play this season, Sanders’ second as head coach. The Tigers are currently the top-ranked team in the conference’s eastern division.

Given his celebrity and effervescent personality, it is unsurprising he has been a strong recruiter. According to 247Sports, Jackson State is ranked 55th in college football recruiting in 2021. This may not sound like such a coup, but the Tigers were not in the top 200 in 2020. With name, image, and likeness money now a part of college sports, he is a figurehead who could credibly drive endorsement campaigns to land top talents.

Whether or not Sanders winds up getting the TCU job, it not a stretch to say he will be in consideration for a lot of Power Five jobs as they inevitably open up in the coming years. At some point — barring a scandal — one would have to think he will land one.
