Jackson State football coach Deion Sanders said his team is “operating in crisis mode” with no water, air-conditioning, running toilets or showers amid the city’s water emergency.
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves declared a state of emergency on Tuesday, after excessive rainfall worsened problems in one of Jackson’s water-treatment plants and caused low water pressure throughout the capital city. In an Instagram video on Tuesday, Sanders said his Jackson State football team is without water and air-conditioning, and are unable to shower and use toilets in the school’s campus housing and the team’s facility.
“We’ve been hit with a little crisis in the city of Jackson,” Sanders said in the video. “We don’t have water; water means we don’t have air conditioning. We can’t use toilets. We don’t have water, therefore we don’t have ice, which pretty much places a burden on the program. So right now we’re operating in crisis mode.”
The former two-time Super Bowl champion said he was trying to relocate his players to hotels to take care of their needs.
“I got to get these kids off campus … into a hotel and accommodate them so that they can shower properly and take care of their needs, make sure all our kids are fed and all our kids have the necessities of life for the next several days until this crisis subsides,” Sanders said. “That’s where we’re operating in right now.”
Sanders then filmed his team inside the locker room saying how hot it is inside the team facility. The former All-Pro cornerback added that the team is working on finding somewhere to practice.

“We’re in a hotel, hotel. I feel good,” Sanders said Wednesday in another Instagram video. We’re back and recalibrated. We’re back on the steady, confident. We got our groove, we got our swagger back. Had a stumble for a minute but we regrouped.”
Sanders also shared clips of his players doing school work at the hotel during a buffet-style breakfast.
Reeves said on Tuesday that the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency would start distributing both drinking water and non-potable water in the city of 150,000 residents, and the National Guard would be called in to help.
Jackson State’s season-opener is Sunday in Miami against Florida A&M.
