Deion Sanders got stiff-armed by an angry opposing coach when trying to go in for a postgame hug.
Sanders, the head coach of Jackson State, saw his team spoil Alabama State’s homecoming weekend with a 26-12 win in Montgomery on Saturday. The Pro Football Hall of Famer and Alabama State coach Eddie Robinson Jr. exchanged a handshake near midfield but when Sanders tried to add a hug to the postgame festivities, Robinson rejected him. Robinson put his left arm into Sanders’ s chest and the aggressively swiped it away.
Sanders was surprised by the rejection and Robinson said he felt Sanders was being disrespectful to the media in the week leading up to the game.
“My exact words was, ‘Hey man, you had them ready to play. Good game,'” Sanders said of the on-field exchange. “Shook hands and tried to embrace and he pushed off. That was it.”
The two did not meet on the field prior to kickoff.
“It could be a plethora of things,” Sanders added. “I think he thought he was going to get a win. I don’t know why he would’ve ever thought that. Secondly, he said that I didn’t come to greet him in the center of the field. I don’t know if you understand but we got here very late. So that expedited our whole process of preparation. So then we were in like, ‘let’s go get it [mode].”
Deion Sanders APRobinson told reporters that Sanders walked through Alabama State’s end zone during pregame warm-ups instead of taking a more direct route to the sideline. He also felt Jackson State should have taken a knee late in the game instead of trying to add to its lead. Robinson saw “no need for an embrace.”
“I’m going to always be respectful and respect the game,” Robinson said. “You’ve got the great [coaches], W.C. Gorden, Eddie Robinson, those guys, Marino Casem, I’m living on the shoulders of the SWAC.”
While Jackson State absolutely dominated the game, totaling 441 yards to Alabama State’s 177, it was a 17-12 game early in the fourth quarter before two scoring drives by Jackson State put the game away.
Jackson State quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Deion Sanders’ son, went 30-for-46 passing with 332 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception giving his dad his 20th collegiate head coaching win. The victory improves the Tigers to 5-0 and drops Alabama State to 3-3.
