This triumphant second coming is over. The Devils have given up hope of re-signing their Stanley Cup charm, Claude Lemieux.

“What Claude is looking for I don’t think will be in New Jersey,” GM Lou Lamoriello told The Post yesterday. “I say that with all due respect for what he has done, but I feel good about what we have, and especially about the addition of Turner Stevenson.”

Lemieux is believed to have turned down the Devils’ final offer, probably some $10 million over three years, trimming his list of potential destinations to four teams, including the Rangers.

In giving up on Lemieux, the Devils are following a long-established pattern of being unable to keep their unrestricted free agents, usually for financial reasons. Bruce Driver, Doug Gilmour and Dave Andreychuk are three major escapees.

In each of the last two seasons Lemieux played for the Devils, they won the Cup, while in the intervening four years, they won one playoff round.

Devils owner John McMullen last week said that he didn’t believe Lemieux would be returning to N.J. next year, citing Lemieux’s contract requirements as the obstacle.

Lemieux is seeking a four-year package in the $15 million range, and it is believed that at least one team is willing to go four years to land the 35-year-old who has never missed the playoffs in his 15 NHL seasons. Lemieux made $2.5 million last year.

Besides salary and contract length, Lemieux is also believed to be factoring post-career opportunities into his decision. The Blues, Panthers and Stars may be the other finalists.
